Can't understand why anyone would want their ears (or anything else) pierced. Am I missing something?

You are not missing anything. I remember when my mother & sister got their ears pierced, (aged approx 40& 60) completely put me off my dinner. I can never understand why someone would want to put holes in themselves. It seems perverse, but we seem to be the odd ones out on this issue. I am grateful that I can now look at a piercing and not wonder where I can go to throw up, but that did take me a couple of months. The only good point is the ease with which presents were able to be selected. Very MSE as I used to go for ones with the best discounts.

And don't even think about the tongue piercing - put me right off my whisky, and that takes some doing. My stomach is reacting just to the thought.

I have just no idea why people would want to disfigure themselves like this. I'll duck now cos I guess I will have committed some major offence.

I should add that I don't have a daughter, but if I had I would be making her wait until she was 18. But I don't think that any daughter of mine would actually want to be pierced.

I think my daughter was about 10 when she had hers done, I was about 8.

My piercer/tattoist always told me a gun was ok for the normal ear piercing, but for anything else it has to be a needle. I think both of us (actually 3 of us cos my son has one done) had the main ones done with a gun, but for both of us everything else has been needles.

I was 10 and it was a reward for passing my piano exam,
I remember getting the result from my teacher and all I cared about was whether I could get it done, wasn't so bothered about the fact I'd passed the exam otherwise!

I remember most of the girls in my class had it done in year 6, seemed to be the time for getting it done.

I can't stand seeing babies with it done. I have a 4 week old id feel sick watching her have it done. Plus babies ears are so small and cute why do people want to add earrings to them so soon?! They are cute enough as they are.

Whenever she gets them pierced, please don't let anyone use a piercing gun.

And so forth. Of course, lots of people will have had theirs done with a gun and not encountered problems, but it's not really something I'd want to risk, especially with a younger person who is relying on you to help them with the decision. :)

It's perfectly safe to get your ear lobes pierced with a gun, as the tissue is soft and can easily stretch to accommodate an earring.

However, this is not the case in other areas of the ear containing cartilage, a hollow needle should be used which actually removes a small section to make way for the earring. Using a gun for these areas often leads to infection.

What a load of judgemental rubbish

My daughter had her ears pierced for her 6th birthday, it's down to you OP, no-one else.

It's certainly down to you what people think of your daughter, but if you don't care.....

both had them done around 11 I think. one ended up with an infection the doctor needed to sort out. Both girls wore earrings for a couple of years but they lost interest a while ago. They can wear them if they want to which was important for me as my mum made such a big deal out of a little earlobe piercing when I was 17 and it infuriated me. The younger one -now 15- wants some body piercings for her 16th and I said not on my money. When she's 18 she can do what she likes but maybe the brain has kicked in by then ...there's hope.

My Mum wouldn't let me have mine done when I asked at 11. I had to wait until I left school at 16. My Mum had always been dead set against it but when she saw mine she immediately went off and had hers done! I had 2nd holes at 18 and 3rd at 32! I've never had an infection and they've all been done with a gun. I did eventually allow the 3rd holes to heal up though and now only have the 2 holes in each ear.

As I've grown older (late 50's now) my lobes have sagged somewhat and there's a line, like a wrinkle, coming from each hole. Years of wearing heavy earrings! So now I wear studs only.

I've never regretted having them done.

The only negative thing I can say is that in my early 40's I applied for and got a job. I had long hair so my ears weren't on show. At the time I used to wear 3 largish gold sleepers in each ear. After I'd been in this job for about 6 months I went in 1 day with my hair tied back. My manager noticed the earrings and asked how long I'd had them and had I had them when he'd interviewed me for the job. I told him yes, I'd had them at interview but my hair had been loose so he hadn't seen them. He replied that it was just as well he hadn't noticed them as if he had he would have thought twice about employing me!

However a few weeks later he took on a bloke with lip piercings so I don't know how serious he was being.

Originally from non British Europe! and my ears were pierced when I was a baby: needle and thread. I was given one pair of earrings from my godfather, but didn't actually wear earrings until mum brought me a pair of studs when I was 11. The holes had never closed and all was well. It IS a cultural norm in some places.

When I was a child (I'm in my 50's now) it wasn't commonplace for children to have pierced ears, unless they were Catholics: Virtually all the little girls from the RC school had tiny gold hoop earrings. Slightly off-topic, I know, but is/was there a religious or cultural reason for it, or just coincidence? Certainly made Catholicism seem glamorous to a little girl who'd have loved earrings, a First Communion white dress and veil, plus the chance to choose themselves a lovely saint's name like Maria, Theresa or Bernadette :D.
