  • I think I had my first set done at 8-9, second at 14, third at 17 and fourth at 19 :)

Sadly I stopped wearing earrings for a while and seem to only have the first set useable now :(

It's different for everyone - Mum basically said she would let me have them done when I nagged her haha!

  • My daughter was about 8 when she got her first one then she had her second done about 11.

She got her belly button done when she turned 16 and she's talking about various other parts of her face now, mostly the ears thankfully! I'm happy for her to get what she wants but pray that she changes her mind about a stretcher!

Its tattoos she's harping on about now! Apparently half her mates have had tattooes since they were 13/14 but Ive told her legally she needs to be 18. Had to get a tattooist to convince her!

My DD had hers done when she started senior school, having begged for months (peer pressure I think). It was fine at first, and I was able to show her how to change the earrings after 6 weeks. Then I think she wore a pair of cheaper earrings (only for a matter of hours) and developed an allergy/infection. Even though we returned to the original studs she kept getting repeated infections. In the end it got to a point where she would be crying with pain, dreading me cleaning them so we took the earrings out and let the holes close up. I think all in all, she had the piercings for 9 months. She doesn't miss them at all and is much happier!!! I think if she mentioned trying again, I would suggest she waits until she is a bit older.

Babies have them done in Europe, it's the norm over there, all my friends have had their daughters done very young, from babies:D
"in Europe"? And where would this be? The UK is Europe too! I also live in France and can confirm that you practically never see very small children with pierced ears.

I grew up in the UK, though (despite living in France now), and initially my mother said I wouldn't be allowed until I was 16. However, my best friend got hers done at 10 or 11, as did my cousin, so I just nagged and nagged until I got mine done too at the same age :D

BJK (quality name BTW) is bang on. Its disgraceful to see youngsters with pierced ears.

We've told our daughter 16 and she is content with that.

Whenever she gets them pierced, please don't let anyone use a piercing gun.

And so forth. Of course, lots of people will have had theirs done with a gun and not encountered problems, but it's not really something I'd want to risk, especially with a younger person who is relying on you to help them with the decision. :)

    Agreed Pechow!

My first 2 sets were done with a gun and they got infected. Proper piercer with a needle wins out every time :)

I really do cringe when I see people going to places like Claire's accessories (my own were done in a jewellers with a gun and they are wonky!), both my sisters had theirs done there and both got infected. My 2nd and 3rd set were done in a proper piercing studio and if I ever have kids that want them done I'll take them to a reputable studio (example being when I got my lip pierced it was the most hygienic place I've ever set foot it and all above board)

Mine were done with a gun, as were my cousin's, sister's, aunt's and mum's. Different people, different stories. I just don't buy into this "piercing guns are evil" stuff, and the sources mentioned above can hardly be cited as reliable, as anyone with a scaremongering agenda can add to it. In the hands of an experienced piercer, a gun OR needle should be fine.

Also I'm sure standards have improved for those of us who had it done when we were younger with less regulation and standards back then
