i had mine done when I was about 4 years old as I had asked for them done, this was in the late 70s
My sister was about 8 or 9 when she got hers done, she didnt ask until then
DS had his ear pierced during the school hols when he was about 10, the earring was in a few weeks and then he let it heal up. He is sporty so I knew that it wouldnt last as it would be too much faff - thats why I said he could get it done as it wasnt worth the hassle of saying no when it would only last a little while0 -
my DD was 10 or eleven I think - but she had to have it done during school holidays. so I could make sure she looked after it.0

I was either just short of my 12th or 13th birthday when mine were done.
I do think a child should be emotionally mature enough to understand and be capable of cleaning before ears are pierced.
My 11yo doesn't have hers done. She hasn't asked so far. Another poster mentioned Claire's used to sell magnetic earrings. They still do, my DD bought 2 packs yesterday as they were on buy one get one free.0 -
Mine were done with a gun, as were my cousin's, sister's, aunt's and mum's. Different people, different stories. I just don't buy into this "piercing guns are evil" stuff, and the sources mentioned above can hardly be cited as reliable, as anyone with a scaremongering agenda can add to it. In the hands of an experienced piercer, a gun OR needle should be fine.
AFAIK, these days no reputable, experienced body piercer will use a piercing gun.

They were done first when I was about 7 but got infected and closed up. I was I think 12 when I got them done for the second time, 14 when I had the second holes done, 16 when the third holes and the top of my ears were done. I've also had the tragus done on both sides. I'm not keen on seeing babies with their ears pierced but I think it's offensive to assume that if a baby has their ears pierced then their mothers are automatically single mothers on benefits with multiple kids to multiple fathers- someone I used to work with has a young daughter with pierced ears and she is married to an academic at a university down here and she has a good job in the NHS- I'm sure that she would be interested to hear that she's really a total chav and her marriage is totally imaginary.. *needs rolleyes smiley here**The RK and FF fan club* #Family*Don’t Be Bitter- Glitter!* #LotsOfLove ‘Darling you’re my blood, you have my heartbeat’ Dad 20.02.200

I remember having my ears pierced when I was 14. My dad was not at all happy about it.
My mother then had hers done the following day. He was even more upset about that. He soon came round and even started buying us both earrings for Christmas.
My daughter asked if she could have hers done when she was ten. We let her on the Friday she broke up from school for the long summer break. They then healed before she returned in September.
On the subject of piercing guns many years ago I worked with a Del boy character and he would bring his piercing gun to work and for a small fee would do piercings in the staff canteen at lunch time.0 -
My mum was exceptionally laid back. So it was unusual for her when she point blank refused when I asked to get my ears pierced. I was about 7-8. She said not a chance until I was 18. I went on for a bit but it got me nowhere. By the time I was 18 I was over it and never have had my ears pierced.
As long as the child is of an age to understand what having your ears pierced actually entails. Then I think it's okay.
Please don't of anywhere that uses piercing guns. Or your local Claire's. Go to a registered professional piercer.Sigless0 -
Hi,
I do think that it's unfair on the child to have their ears pierced when they are just a baby! There is simply no need and only done because the mother decides she wants it.
Similarly a child up say age 6 can't possibly know what they are letting themselves in for and need protecting from the possible pain and discomfort.
I allowed my daughter to have hers pierced at the start of the summer holidays when she left junior and was going into senior school. So I would say the OP is about right with the age her daughter is now.
I have mine pierced but it wasn't until I was about 18 or older, as it was looked at as being rather common in those days and associated somewhat with gypsies (which would be racist now of course-but that's how it was).

13 years old. Then when she was 15 she did a second piercing herself! She's 16 now and asked if she could have her belly button pierced. We said no for about 3 months and then gave in. Hopefully the piercings will stop there!0

I got mine done when I was 10 and cried my eyes out after begging for years to have them done!
I got them pierced again when I was 18 (second hole in each ear), took me months to work up the courage to tell mum, and I cried... again. Needless to say there have been no more since!Started 30/08/2011Biggest Wins: GHD's, 5* Trip to London, VIP Trip to Isle of MTV Festival in Malta.
