My youngest DD had them done at 7 years old, at the beginning of the summer holidays, so they had plenty of time to heal up.

I had mine done when I was 7 as well.

My oldest DD is 12 now and hasn't wanted them done yet. So we'll let her decide if she wants them done.

I hate seeing babies with them done, it looks so awful.

I think once they are old enough to say they want them done and they understand that it will hurt for a bit, then that's fine.

My daughter had hers done 6 months ago when she was 9. She was having some self esteem issues after being bullied by one girl and so we wanted to let her do something of her choice that would make her feel good about herself, she chose to have her ears pierced. We've had zero problems and she has a jewellery box with many cute earrings in. My only rule is no dangly earrings until she's older, which she's fine with.

One of my cousins wanted to have her ears pierced when she was around 5. Her mother found she was too young though and bought her some earring stickers instead. This may be a good compromise.

DS is 8 and thankfully has never asked but if he ever did I'll be pulling rank and saying "not while you're under my roof" as I can't bear boys (or men for that matter) with earrings. Old fashioned as that might seem to some, I certainly cringe when I see schoolboys with earrings. DS plays rugby and intends on continuing in that vein, so I'll also play on that if he ever asks :D.

That reminds me of the Alas Smith and Jones sketch where Jones announced that he was considering getting an earring. Smith responded with "Only two sorts of men wear earrings... poofs and pirates."

I really do cringe when I see people going to places like Claire's accessories (my own were done in a jewellers with a gun and they are wonky!), both my sisters had theirs done there and both got infected. My 2nd and 3rd set were done in a proper piercing studio and if I ever have kids that want them done I'll take them to a reputable studio (example being when I got my lip pierced it was the most hygienic place I've ever set foot it and all above board)

    I agree.

I will never forget seeing a baby having its ears pierced in there in full view of everyone. It screamed the place down.

My daughter at age 12 wanted hers pierced in there because her friend had hers done there. I took her in to have a look and also to a jewellers which had a special room dedicated to piercing. Claires on the other hand was right at the front of the shop so the girl doing it had to go to the back to wash her hands and then touch door handles etc. to go back the front of the shop!!

My daughter to my relief chose the jewellers as she did not like the idea of everyone seeing it being done. She had no infections her friend however ended up letting hers close up because of infections.

My mum let me have mine done in the summer holidays before I turned 16. Once I turned 16 and my first holes had healed I went and got them done a second time without her knowing and she was not pleased when she found out! I've since had my belly button done when I left home but that got infected for ages and has put me off further piercings for a while. There is no right or wrong age 13 seems very reasonable though.

Daughter will be 12 this year, she's kept on about it for 2 years, I said when she's a teenager eg 13.

Am I being a bit old fashioned ?

My youngest daughter was 7 when she had her ears pierced and 14 when she had her snakebites.

Eldest daughter has no piercings and she is now 17.

I would say, it is entirely up to you though, when you will allow your daughter to get her ears pierced as you are her mum.

  • What about son's? What age should you let them or should they wait to 18.

I have refused so far mostly because I was worried about this fashion for stretching but I don't think they want that now and are glad that they didn't do it but my 15 year old is still on about getting them pierced. What is reasonable?

I`ve always said I`d wait until she had the choice and wanted them done - its not for everyone to want them.

She are turning 8 in a few weeks and she has asked for them.
I`ve told her she can, once they break up for the 6 week holidays.
