I'd be more angry with the guys that stole my wheel......

You're not a child and the council are not your keepers.....

Just accept that bad things happen sometimes and stop complaining.....

I'm relieved that are parts of the country that we aren't spied upon by over-zealous councils.

Just need some advice but didn't know where to put this.

I use a gymnasium, council run (Labour), and outside the gym there are places where you can lock up your bike. Today I used the gym for two hours and when I came back, the front wheel had been taken right off and stolen. The bike was chained up with a decent chain.

I informed the gymnasium and the security came out. I asked him about CCTV and he said there isn't any. A public place and there are no CCTV cameras!! Then I asked whether there were signs nearby informing visitors that if they chain their bikes up here they may get damaged or stolen. There were no notices!

Now if I had been told there were no CCTV I would not have locked my bike up here. If I had been informed not to leave my bike here I would certainly have taken advice. Nothing. No CCTV and no warning sign. Do councils have to put up these signs? I would have thought they would at least warn visitors and customers. I've seen bikes here locked up with string!

The gym security kidly offered to keep my poor old bike in the gymnasium store shed but he did say not to bother reporting it and don't bother with the council because he had a 2 x £800 bikes stolen from within the staff entrance. It was caught on CCTV inside the building and the owners got sweet FA, the theives have still got the bikes because the original owners could not prove that they owned the bike (even though CCTV caught the owners with the bike first!!) Now what does that tell you about these councils?!

So what do I do? I'm thinking about writing to the MP and get him to fork out some cash (they always have cash these politicians) and get a damn bloody sign up warning people not to leave their bikes here or risk damage/theft!

I know it's not the council's fault, but all they need to do is put a small red sign with some white lettering! They could afford it with all the damn proceeds they get from parking fines!

Some days I really despair at the idiocy shown by some people in this country...

CCTV is usually give a false sense of security anyway, both times I've been a victim of crime the cameras were pointed elsewhere

Is this for real?! I only need walk out of my driveway and I'm in a public place not covered by CCTV. You really think every square inch of "public places" is filmed 24/7? Get a grip.

I wonder if the OP thinks there will be someone monitoring the CCTV all the time, ready to call the police if he sees a blurry figure behaving suspiciously?

How can they give a description when the person appears blurry?:D

Same here when someone lovingly decided to run a key down the side of an (appropriately and legally parked) company van I'd left outside a shop for 10 minutes, causing about £900 of damage.

    These things unfortunately happen.

How offensive. :( I'm quite blurry in real life, and it leads to such prejudice in everyday life that you simply can't imagine. I'm refused a passport, often told my ID isn't acceptable, and whenever I show up on CCTV I'm viewed with suspicion without any good reason.
Q: What kind of discussions aren't allowed?
A: It goes without saying that this site's about MoneySaving.

Q: Why are some Board Guides sometimes unpleasant?
A: We very much hope this isn't the case. But if it is, please make sure you report this, as you would any other forum user's posts, to forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com.

    :rotfl:

I bet you wear a baseball hat pulled down over your eyes, and a hoody.. Tut.. The solution is to put up signs saying " criminals not allowed" :D then we'd all be safe- simples .but the sign would need to be written in 24 languages, to be sure not to discriminate.

This theft would not have happened if the council were run by the Conservatives

Well the library and gym would probably have been closed, saving the OP from the hazards associated with having to park his bike there.
