Bike wheel was stolen in public place.

To be fair to the OP it is a Labour run council and we all know Labour are good at state nannying, maybe the local MP could claim it on his expenses and reimburse the OP? Or maybe the OP should take responsibility for his property and realise he made a mistake leaving his bike there?0
-
I wonder if the OP thinks there will be someone monitoring the CCTV all the time, ready to call the police if he sees a blurry figure behaving suspiciously?0
-
I have a question Martynb_ if you thought there were warning signs and "Magic CCTV" that stops theft, why did you bother to lock your bike at all?0
-
Wanting a sign saying "Beware, there is no CCTV operating over this area" or "XXX Council are not responsible for belongings left in this area" seems like the people who need signs on coffee cups warning you that the contents are hot.
I would assume there was no CCTV and assume that there may be thieves in the area unless told otherwise.0 -
I would not have ever chained the bike up here if I had know there was no CCTV though. Why put out specially designated parking spots for bikes?
I don't expect a bike stand to be monitored by CCTV. I expect it to be a target for thieves and I have to lock it properly. Like when I park my car I lock it so it doesn't get stolen.
Do the council just assume you have locks for each wheel or something?
You should secure the wheels if you don't want them stolen, yes. Most bike owners learn this the hard way at some point.
I've only got one lock and that's to tie the bike frame to the bike stand. I can understand someone wanting to take three separate locks with them if they happen to have to chain their bike in a place with no security, but this is a public space!
I don't get it - why would a public space automatically be covered by CCTV? Buy an additional chain/flex lock to lock the wheels to the bike/stand.
This is a council run gymnasium, you'd think they would have a cctv camera up or a sign at least. Even the bike stands at the side of the train station has a warning sign, including the bike stands near the central arcade - and they have cctv up to boot!!
I know the council is not to blame but they should think about visitors and customers and ensure that if there is no cctv then at least there is a warning sign. If they are not going to put either up then what's the point of installing bike stands?!
CCTV wouldn't prevent the wheel being stolen and footage is hardly likely to aid recovery/prosecution anyway. Its your responsibility to secure your bike appropriately - including the wheels.
Bonkers!
You should assume that thieves are everywhere (because they are) and will steal anything given the slightest opportunity and will go for the easiest targets and act to secure your property at all times accordingly whether that me locking your bike, not leaving your bag around, putting valuables in your locker at the gym even while you have a shower.
I know people that have had watches stolen at the gym - I hope you don't suggest CCTV for the changing rooms! :eek:0 -
OP, if there had been a sign saying that 'Thieves operate in this area, would you still have left your bike there? Just wondering-Good enough is good enough, and I am more than good enough!:j
If all else fails, remember, keep calm and hug a spaniel!0 -
The library and leisure centres aren't even run by the council in that area, but by an arms length community trust. When do schools go back?0

Its a sad reflection on society that people expect there to be CCTV in all public areas. Talk about Big Brother.
And signs all over the place too!
If you were worried about your bike could you not have looked around with your own eyes to see if there were any cameras in the area. They are not too hard to spot stuck up all over the place and when you could not see any make the concious decision whether to park your bike there.
No wonder there are so many 'No win no fee' lawyers all over the place with people like you trying to make up claims like this against the council. Also what about the taxpayer who presumably has to fund all of this, the money does not come out of the MP's pocket each and everyone of us pays it via their taxes.0 -
This theft would not have happened if the council were run by the ConservativesOwing on CC £00.00 :j
It's like shooting nerds in a barrel0
