Going back to the dla forms- I forget when you originally got them, or when your date of claim might have been.

But can I suggest you drop them a quick line (even if you can't complete the form right now) and say you had a family catastrophe on (insert date) that has delayed your completing the forms. With luck they might take an earlier date than they would otherwise.
Then of course, get form in asap.

  • Dear FD. Your woes have made me log on for the first time in 3 years of being on MSE.
I too have had bad moments over the past few years. OH huge debts, me depression and drinking. Things came to a head when he was signed off sick for over two years. I was suddenly the money bags and he was stuck. Luckily once family were involved things were much easier. Everyone backing up decisions to get help for both of us. I am now going to support groups and he is now back working and has his own self imposed regime. His vice was gadgets and gizmos.
Although things can look bleak at the beginning the only reason that there is no light at the end of the tunnel is because you haven't found the switch!
Although we have no kids involved it still took/takes a lot of courage to admit to failures.
I have spent the whole of today reading your story and wish you all the best with which ever way everything turns out.
As another thought, sis has MS and son has ADHD therefore if she and a friend go swimming the local authority has a scheme that if the person in the pool is deemed a carer, they don't pay.
Hope you can get some support like this.
Take care. Chin up and keep fighting the b****ds!
  • Thanks for taking the time to reply Troublesparking its nice to read others positive outcomes its hard to imagine one at a time like this.

  • StepChange have agreed that a DAS is his best option going on their calculations he should be paying back £353 for just over 8 years.

All coming through him, the debt advisor can't believe how unreasonable I am being by asking him to move out and he will have to go through the whole budgeting process again when he finds some where to live that time they might reject it! !!! Passing the buck back to if I make him go he is going to self destruct. I called hus bluff said find let him go BR I will find somewhere for the girls and I too live with no problems.

If you get a chance then ring them and order another form. They will stamp it with the date you call. You then have 6 weeks to fill it in and they will backdate any payment to the date of the phone call.

That will buy you some time. Put it on your calender / reminder on your phone etc.

Hang in there - it sounds like some progress is being made on your bumpy road

Errrrrrrrr, knowing what I know about stepchange they will not make nay moral judgements on you asking him to move out.

Yes, the DAS May be rejected (anything is possible) but it's unlikely once it's up and running. I may be doing him a disservice here, but I don't believe a word.

One thing is odd to me though, well lots of things really, but can you answer me this....

If he has given over a budget to stepchange, that must include share of mortgage, utilities, phones, childcare, child expenses, clothes etc, why do they think it will cost him more if he moves out? It won't necessarily be the case. That is why I find stepchange being moral guardians of your relationship a bit of a porkie.
