If a man abdicates responsibility for his diet to his partner and leaves her to do all the cooking, shopping etc. then they can't really complain about what they get fed as a result! I'm assuming 'his missus' wouldn't stop him if he decided he wanted to start preparing his own meals.

Unless the food is being prepared on a commercial basis, I never complain about what I am fed. It doesn't matter who has cooked it.

It drives my wife nuts because, with two exceptions, she's never had any negative feedback since we married. On those two exceptions it was really, really bad. Inedible actually.

It seems to me that, Gra76 , you love your wife very much and that you are worried about her health. You are right to worry. 5 stone overweight is not healthy and is likely to shorten her life expectancy. But she is depressed. The spiral of comfort-eating just adds to the depression.

I think it is imperative that you do things with her. You have already done the calorie-counting and you have lost weight, but it didn't work for her. It didn't work for me either, because I was constantly hungry.

What did work for me was a combination of two things. Firstly, the Fast Diet. Fasting for two non-consecutive days a week meant that I was hungry only two days a week instead of seven. It also made me appreciate food more. This can be difficult when you have children to feed, but if you both do it, together, you can encourage each other.

Secondly, I was despairing of ever finding a form of exercise that I really enjoyed, until I discovered Zumba Gold. The Gold form is great for people who aren't fit, as it isn't as fast and furious as the ordinary Zumba. The music is wonderful, joyous and fun! Although it's dancing, it's not a dance class, it's exercise, so it doesn't matter if you don't get the steps right! Men can do it, too, and there are children's classes too, so the whole family can do it! The combination of music and exercise releases endorphins, so you feel good! I love it so much, that I gradually increased from once a week to as often as I can go!

The combination of the Fast Diet and Zumba meant that I went down 3 dress sizes in a year, with very little effort. If you could do it with her, and encourage each other, it may work for her too.

Regarding the biscuits, I'm assuming they are in the house for the children? Well, it wouldn't hurt the children not to have choc bars and biscuits as a matter of routine, but only to buy them occasionally as a treat. If they are not in the house, it's harder to binge on them. Are your children overweight? Even if not, it might be useful to include them in helping Mummy get back to health. And fewer calorie-laden
snacks might improve their behaviour and so reduce your wife's stress levels.

Sorry this is so long-winded! But keep on loving her and Good Luck!

Crank diets never work over the long-term.

All she has done is lower her overall calorie intake. A tried, tested and traditional way of losing weight.

Which in itself isn't a Diet, it's just a sensible diet - an entirely different thing...

The 5/2 way of eating isn't a crank diet.

It's a crank diet, there is no evidence of its long-term effectiveness - like all other crank diets.

Hmm, what do you class as long term? Months? Years? Where do you draw the line?

There has been research on the effectiveness of this over the last 10 years.
