A significant day in history today - 100 years since the outbreak of WW1

During my family history research I've found a couple of relatives who served in the Great War. A great uncle who signed up in 1915, when he was in his late 30's. He survived the war, but there was a young cousin a couple of times removed who signed up on the outbreak of war, and was killed in August 1918. To have survived so long and be killed within a couple of months of peace, seems particularly moving.

We intend to go to the Imperial War Museum in the autumn, to see all the new WW1 galleries.

A significant day in my personal history - I met Mr Goldie 35 years years ago today! Can't believe how the time has flown by so quickly.

Anyway, on with the day - I sold 3 out of the 4 jigsaws listed on eBay, so 6 sales for the weekend. Everyone has paid, so I'll get the parcels posted.

I had an unexpected bonus, as a book sold on Green Metropolis.

I started with GM in 2008. I get £3 for every book sold. Back in 2008, it cost £1.86 to post an average book, so there was a reasonable profit. Now if costs £2.80 to cost a book, so that's 20p profit! These days, it's very slow selling books, due to eReaders, and I rarely list any new books for the same reason. But it does clear the odd book from time to time. I'll put the full £3 in the HAF when the funds are cleared.

I fully intend to do as much of the housework as possible, so I will crack on now.

    Have a good Monday.

    Not much to report today.

Will walk down the road to buy one onion, which is all I need, then I'll probably get some garden tidying done.

This afternoon I'm having my hat cut, and in between those things I'll hope to get a survey that I qualify for, or do a few competition entries.

At the moment I have three tomatoes that are starting to turn red, so very soon it'll be tomatoes with everything

    Hi GG,

am a bit behind with diaries but great news about earlier retirement plans :D.

I sell on GM too [and Amazon] but GM seems to have ground to a decisive halt this year for me so I may get rid of my books on there. There's a couple of places in town that have a bookcase where you can pick up a free book to read and donate books for others to take. I'll leave some of mine there I think.

Are you really having your 'hat cut'? Or is that hair? I'm getting mine cut tomo - I just get a dry cut and it doesn't cost much .

You were saying in earlier posts about getting screened out of surveys for being married - I think I get screened out for not being married to OH and no kids so who knows!

Good news on the tomatoes - love the taste of newly picked toms

    :rotfl::rotfl:

Having my hat cut would be very novel !! :rotfl:

I blame typing on my iPad :o

Having decided against having my hat cut, I went to the hairdressers instead, and had a good old chat with her, shame it costs £38.25 for the hour

When I was in the Coop this morning buying my onion I picked up an application form for their loyalty/membership scheme. I rarely shop in there, but in the interests of maximising benefits from purchases, I'm going to join up.

My JL membership card has arrived, and I've enrolled Mr Goldie too, so when we go to Bluewater next week we can have our free coffee and cake.

Teapot, I have no kids either, and that's another thing that gets me screened out. However, today I've managed 8 surveys, so that is much better than normal

I've also been entering some competitions. In the last week I've entered random comps, but I've started logging them now, so I can remember what I've done. It's bloomin' hard work though, I feel like I've been at work all day!

If I get a few wins, it'll be worth it.... one a month would keep me happy!

    Hi Goldie

Just to pass this on, not sure if you already have it, it's the link to a pre-questionnaire for joining the RM surveys ... here.

Retirement this side of Christmas sounds magnificent, fingers crossed for a successful completion of the plan! x

Have you found the Radio 4 Series 'Home Front'? 2 episodes in and I think it might be really good. Its only 12 mins long per episode and each one is set on this day 100 years ago against the back drop of the first world war.
Just thought I'd mention it as it might be of interest - also - its set in Folkestone - so not that far away :)
Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became

In the event the proverbial hits the fan then co-habitees are better stashing their cash than being mortgage free !!

Cheers Hbbb, I had a rummage on Google a couple of days ago, and found that page for the RM surveys. I've reapplied, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed

That sounds very interesting, I'll have a listen on IPlayer. The WW1 period is fascinating. It amazes me that something that happened 100 years ago still affects our lives today

Enjoy your tea and cake! I love Bluewater, even though I don't buy as much these days, it's always fun to look round

I meant to say yesterday, I'm reviewing my selling situation on GM.

At first, it was reasonably easy to sell on GM, especially if it was a recently released book, a classic, or other desirable book.

Some things were always slow, for example if there were lots and lots of other copies listed (think Dan Brown, or chic lit)

I had a brief rally in May this year, when I sold 4 books, but apart from that it's a book every 3 months if I'm lucky.

I expect the charity collecting bags will start to be left on the doorstep when autumn gets here, so some of the books will go in the bags.

I will keep some of the more interesting ones, as I have enough storage space, but if the cost of posting eventually increases to £3 or more, I'll be forced to stop.

I've been out and about this morning, doing a view bits and pieces.

I had an appointment at the opticians, just to have my eye pressure checked, as it was high in January. Pleased to say it had gone down (didn't want trouble with my eyes as well!) I didn't have to pay for this as my mum had glaucoma, which means I get free eye tests.

Then off the M&S for a free coffee :T

I have a nice Fossil watch, which has stopped, so I took it in for a new battery, but it turns out the problem is not the battery, but mechanical or electrical.:(

I have a posh watch, which Mr Goldie bought me for our 25th wedding anniversary, also currently stopped:(

I'm taking that watch to Bluewater next week, so it can go in for mending. I think I'll wear the posh watch more often, and decide later whether to get the Fossil mended, or get a cheap watch to wear from time to time

Then back to M&s as we randomly decided to get a BLT sandwich each for lunch. £5.60 spent :o

Filled up with petrol, at least we had a voucher for 10p off per litre, so saved £2.70

Then on to Dobbies ( I know, it seems like my second home) and bought some flowers to fill another gap, when the original flowers have 'gone off' £10.77 spent - at least I get 10% off for being a card holder.

We seem to be a bit spendy this month, but I don't think it's possible to be completely rigorous all the time

This afternoon will be venturing into the loft. We need to start clearing some of the more bulky items up there. I intend to get one large thing down, get rid of it, whether it's ebay or other online means, or take it to the dump.

When it's gone, something else will be 'processed'

    Hi Goldie,
I enjoyed reading about your day - sounded really nice, and with considered spending rather than with reckless abandon :). I think as long as we're more aware and thoughtful, a few spends are essential to 'life' (a bit like Mr Money Mustache's cheap vs frugal argument, although I'm happy to twist most things to fit what I want to do at that present time, lol)

Really glad your eye test went well x
    Debt remaining: :(
    Mortgage - £117,759 (£134,600, Nov 2013)

Work overpayment and home improvement loan paid back (£19200)
