Why not keep using the old cases to destruction? The lightweight nylon ones are very flimsy and I have seen quite a few damaged on the carousels at the airport. Although I have also seen some very lovely jazzy coloured ones that appeal to my consumer instincts....!

The wheels on the old cases are sadly at destruction level. Each case has two wheels on, and the rubber 'tyre' has worn down to the plastic wheel on three out of the four wheels:eek:

We've looked high and low for replacement wheels, but can find nothing that will fit these cases:(

So it seems the right time to get new cases that are slightly bigger, so we can stuff more in them for the longer holidays, plus a chance to get cases with 4 wheels on them to manoeuvre them around easily.

We'll still use our old cases from time to time, but for shorter UK based holidays.

We had a look in M&S this morning, and the ones we like do look to be of good quality, although they didn't have the colour we wanted in the largest size. But it's 20% off voucher day on Thursday, so we'll order online. They aren't the really jazzy ones, but they'll be noticeable with our bright green straps round them!

The Asda order has arrived so I have that fully stocked feeling

I used a trolley case to destruction last year, though I didn't realise - the wheels were so worn that the corner of the case dipped to the ground, and rubbed along the pavements for so long that it was "sanded" open!!! If that had happened when I was at the start of a 5 week trip, as opposed to getting back from a weekend ... big problems :rotfl:

That's what's worrying us - getting half way round the world, and our suitcase finally gives up!

:T Fab news about the cruise Goldie - you will have a brilliant time. I've not been to Oz but have been fortunate enough to have spent several weeks in NZ and it's beautiful. One of my favourite places ever (at least so far!)

It must have been wonderful to have an extended stay in New Zealand. This was another reason for booking this particular cruise, as it'll visit both the North and South Islands. Some years they only visit one or the other.

In the days before we booked this cruise, I was feeling quite anxious and scared, as it is such a BIG thing to do.

Last night, Mr Goldie was watching Come Dine With Me, and saw a plaque on someone's wall, with this saying.

'If your dreams don't scare you, they're not big enough.'

That seemed very appropriate for me,so I've put it in my signature. ( I was getting bored of running totals, anyway. Too much like hard work keeping them updated)

It's really wet and horrible here, but we have done something constructive. We've shampooed the carpets downstairs. They look a lot better now.

But apart from that, nothing much going on.

Today has been a strange mix of spending and saving.

We've ordered those suitcases from M&S as we have a 20% off voucher for today.

We also went out to the local M&S (had a free coffee there), to look at the coats for winter.

At the moment I've got a three quarter length anorak, which is fine for most occasions in the winter, and a smarter three quarter length coat. But this coat is a bit too tight now, if I wear a jumper.

I've got the money put by in the clothing fund, and as it was 20% off day, thought it'd be a good opportunity to look for a new coat. There was nothing there at all that interested me, so I'll use the anorak for all winter occasions, and sell the coat on eBay, and not get a replacement at this point.

We had also half thought of trying the 'Silver Screen' at the local cinema (£3 each, plus coffee and biscuit). But the film they're showing is bound to be shown on the cruise in February. So we decided against it.

The coach company hasn't called back about the theatre trip we were enquiring about, so we've shelved that idea too. This coach outfit is really bad about callbacks, which is a shame really, as their pick up point is really convenient. We may have to switch to another company which is better for customer service, but not so convenient for the pick ups

I'm quite happy to do a bit of cutting back now, with a view to spending on the upcoming holidays

We managed a good walk today, as the weather was nice for once

Sounds great, Goldie - really conscious spending :)
2023: the year I get to buy a car
  • It was a gorgeous day for walking. I was strolling about too this afternoon. A good walk is one of the most wonderful free, healthy things to do.
Paid off mortgage nine years early in 2013. Now picking and choosing our work to fit in with the rest of our lives!
Still thrifty though, after all these years:D
