I agree with the person above, go for a bob or a really good cut touching your shoulders. Theres nothing worse than long hair on middle aged/ older women, it makes them look older and that they are trying to hang on to their youth.
Grow older with class, dont be like Madonna.

I disagree. Different people suit different hair. I had my hair cut short once on a whim (years ago) and cried for days, it was awful! Now it's back to its usual length - about 3 inches below my shoulder - and I much prefer it this way. It suits me. :A

A friend of mine had a baby last year and cut her lovely long hair hair short (a 'mummy haircut', as she called it) on her sister's advice, because it would be practical. She hates it!

Your age should not dictate your hair length, imho. :D

I certainly didnt wake up on my 40th birthday thinking holy !!!!, Im middle aged, time to get the scissors to my hair.

I think whats lacking in some people is self awareness. There will be 20 and 30 year olds who dont suit long hair and have it. Theres just this accepted notion that women over 40 shouldnt have long hair because they are too old for it.

Which I think is a load of old crock personally. I think people who do have a bit of self awareness know what suits them and know what doesnt and as such will know when its time to give their hair the chop.

Not because they are 41 or 42 or 43 and so on.

I have my hair just past my shoulders usually. but, no-one ever sees that because I wear it up. I hate short hair on myself. I find it easy to put in a messy bun or a chignon - takes me about 30 seconds! forgot to say - I am sixty this year.

Maybe a long bob would be ideal. So you can still put it up if required and down if you want. They you still have options !

I had my long hair cut into a long bob a few weeks ago and I love it.

But I know people in their 40's with fabulous-looking long hair. I can't be bothered to make much effort with mine though, and I think that having it loose in a long bob makes me look younger than I do with it tied back. I can still tie it back when I need to. For the first week I needed a clip to keep one of the side bits out of my eyes when it was tied back though, and that looked a bit too 'young'.

With a long bob I've found that I brush it more often because it's not such a big job, and it looks nicer when brushed.

My friend has found that her long hair has started to thin and look bedraggled and that's why she is considering a cut, but everyone's hair is different and I don't think there's a certain 'age' where you should stop having long hair.

My husband likes it long, but the long bob is like the best of both worlds, he still thinks it looks feminine, and I get hair that's easier to deal with, and I love it. I'd keep it like this even if my husband hated it :D

There are very many things worse!

I'm a bit younger than the OP (35) and have waist-length fair hair. It suits me, and I like it. I won't be cutting it on some calendar date.

Like other fashions, these change - when my Granny was 35, short hair was for young, modern women, and long hair for their Victorian grandmothers!

  • I'm 33 and everyone is on at me to cut my hair as I'm too old for long hair, it's down to my bra strap and worse of all it's dyed purple! I like it though, if I decided to cut my hair it certainly wouldn't be due to my age.

Every couple of years I think "I should get my hair cut shorter, long hair doesn't suit older women ...". But I'm lazy, and the bob turns into a long bob turns into mid-back length hair ;) Besides, if I have a short bob then I look even more like my Mum !

Thanks to everyone.....I think maybe i'm feeling like this because i'm due a change...ive been stuck in the house for 4 months due to my illness etc and feel like the glam has gone out of my life and turned a bit mumsy. Now i'm starting to feel a little better i'm starting to get some interest back into my image and think a long bob is called for....not scared about cutting it off as ive had all lengths and am lucky my hair does seem to grow quite quickly.
