Can i ask people's opnions on a question that has been niggling me for a few weeks.
I am in my mid (cough) 40's and have long hair, it's down to the middle of my back.
My daughters say they like it long, my husband says he liked it better when i had it in a bob and i liked it mid length.
I am due to have it cut next week and am swinging towards having about 5inchs cut off (or more). I feel i am too old now to have long blonde locks and think a bob or mid length can look classier for a woman my age. With my health not being as good as it was 2 years ago i do find it easier to manage long but thats because i can just pull it back into a pony tail and not bother too much about it, but then think 'how boring'.
Is there an age appropriate hairstyle rule?
EDIT: Just realised i mean't to post in the Health & Beauty section....sorry Mods if you would like to move me!

I've heard people say that long hair can seem to drag your face down as you get older, but I certainly don't think that should be a rule. You can always have a few layers put in to make a long cut more flattering after all.
As you like it mid-length, I think you should go for that. It'll make it more manageable but you'll still be able to put it back if needed. How about having the best of both worlds and having a long bob?0 -
I'm just turned 40, and have recently had my long blonde hair cut from just above bum length to a bob. When I first had it cut, it was too short to put back in a ponytail, which was a pain, but now it has grown a bit, I prefer it -easier to manage/wash/dry etc, looks, as you say, a bit "classier" and age appropriate (yet actually makes me look younger imo), and I can still ponytail it for the gym etc. I do wear it down more, whereas when my hair was long it was always in a bunch/messy bun. It also looks in fantastic condition, and in general, I think I look better turned out and more like I take care of myself with the bob.
I'd say a well styled long bob or mid-length cut is probably the way to go. It's scarey to do when you're used to long hair though!0 -
Thanks to you both....you have both confirmed what i was secretly thinking.....a long bob.0

I agree with the person above, go for a bob or a really good cut touching your shoulders. Theres nothing worse than long hair on middle aged/ older women, it makes them look older and that they are trying to hang on to their youth.
Grow older with class, dont be like Madonna.0 -
Don't know what happened to the rest of my post lol...
I find with my hair now i sleep with it in a messy bun and wake up to a tangle, if i put it down for bed it ends up under my arm pits, and even under my boobs(sorry!). I think shorter it may feel a little more glam as it won't be as easy to stick up and forget.0 -

Your right.....what got me really thinking about it was seeing my SIL last week, she has hair longer than mine and wore it down for a change..sorry to say it even though she is 6 years older than me and very attractive it made her look about 15 years older and haggard....well thats me for the chop next week..:D0 -
There are plenty of Kronenbourg 1664 women at work - look 16 from the back, and 64 from the front.....that's why my hair is short!!0

Yep, that's me. I've been thinking about going for the chop for a long time but am too chicken. Plus, I have no money to pay for a haircut.0

I have long hair and am in my mid 40s. Im not trying to hang onto my youth. I just dont want to cut my hair short and I have wavy hair and a bob doesnt and has never suited me. Theres a pic of me on my profile after my last hair cut and colour which was around 6 weeks ago. (Hair is straight in that pic as it had just been straightened when the hairdresser cut and coloured my hair).
I dont think my hair ages me either. When I do feel its time to get it cut a bit shorter then I'll do it, but I wont do it because of my age, I'll do it because I want a change. And it wont be a bob simply because my hair is too wavy and Im useless with straighteners.
Nothing wrong with bobs, my mum has one, shes in her 60s, but she has hardly any grey hair, she's young looking and she has poker straight hair which I dont have, shes also had it short and suits it short as well.0 -
I have the opposite problem. I'm 42 and have a long bob but find the fringe a pain to style and want to grow it out and grow my hair really long again.
I take no notice of what others consider appropriate for my age and instead opt for what I like and what is practical for me and it sounds as if a long bob would be more practical for you and you can still wear it up when you like.0
