    Hi All,

I am complete newbie to gardening :-)

I am doing up my garden in the new house and I already have a mature pear and apple tree. One of the apple trees was almost dead (I had 2) so I removed it and now I am worried about the remaining apple tree as I believe you need another one for them to fruit :-(

Anyway can I plant a new apple tree and how long will it take to fruit/mature? I am also after other fruit trees Cherry/Plum.

Any advice what I should and advice on caring for existing trees/fertilizing etc.

You can buy a slightly bigger apple tree, plant it out and start getting fruit the next year, whatever the one you have left, you really need to get get one from the same flowering group or one next to it either side.
Apples are self-incompatible; they must cross-pollinate to develop fruit. During the flowering each season, apple growers often utilize pollinators to carry pollen. Honey bees are most commonly used. Orchard mason bees are also used as supplemental pollinators in commercial orchards. Bumblebee queens are sometimes present in orchards, but not usually in enough quantity to be significant pollinators.[48]

There are four to seven pollination groups in apples, depending on climate:

Group A – Early flowering, 1 to 3 May in England (Gravenstein, Red Astrachan)
    Group B – 4 to 7 May (Idared, McIntosh)
    Group C – Mid-season flowering, 8 to 11 May (Granny Smith, Cox's Orange Pippin)
Group D – Mid/late season flowering, 12 to 15 May (Golden Delicious, Calville blanc d'hiver)
    Group E – Late flowering, 16 to 18 May (Braeburn, Reinette d'Orl!ans)
    Group F – 19 to 23 May (Suntan)
    Group H – 24 to 28 May (Court-Pendu Gris) (also called Court-Pendu plat)
One cultivar can be pollinated by a compatible cultivar from the same group or close (A with A, or A with B, but not A with C or D).[50]

Varieties are sometimes classified by the day of peak bloom in the average 30-day blossom period, with pollenizers selected from varieties within a 6-day overlap period.

    Thanks for the information.

How do I find out what type of apples they are? The tree is just start to bloom so either I have to wait and see what the apples look like or can I tell some other way?

Can you tell I don't know much about apples???

Going by the time of blooming. I would guess they are a Group C or a late group B as it's been a long winter. If you visit a nursery ask if they have a new or unusual cultivar in one of those groups - that way not much chance of getting the same variety.

The other way round it is to get a crab apple of some kind (the mallus john downie has some pretty varieties), they will fertilise everything - depends if you like crab apple jelly or not.

  • My order appears to be coming in dribs and drabs. The pots arrived last week and yesterday 6 shrubs arrived, worryingly though there are 2 more shrubs listed on the dispatch note which are crossed out in pen but are showing as shipped online). I am still waiting for 4 fruit trees and another 2 shrubs.

Mine were all a bit under 5 ft and I think they are all suited to pot growing (plus you can always prune them to the size you want). hth

I had some of my shrubs delivered today, and hadn't checked them. After reading your post, I've also got 2 missing, scored off on delivery note. The ones I've got look in good condition though.
