Great tip about the dust. We moved into our new build house in May and there is still dust in the air. Constantly cleaning. I will try the hairspray trick tomorrow as my lo with asthma is away this weekend.

Sounds like a good spend day - good fun that is :)

I'm hairs praying every 4 hours at the mo, it does work

  • So a NSd today :T

    1) I've cleaned the spare room to within an inch of its life, including dismantling the cupboard of doom, sawing some of the panels in half so they would go in my car - trip to the tip tomorrow (raining today)

    2) I cleaned the spare room, walls, skirting boards , window, door, carpet.

    3) do you know? I cleaned the spare room. It took me all day. I'm going to gaffa tape it up so that the builders can't make a mess.

    4) had a lovely conversation with another techie widow and arranged a meet up in the week. Us tech widows need to stick together (both of our hubby's are on the same job......

Hope you've all had a good day

    Hi Wish

Just wanted to stop by and say hello. Sorry to hear you are having a nightmare with the builders and the dust. It does make you wonder where it all comes from and really does seem to get EVERYWHERE too. You seem to have it under control with though. Great tip re: the hairspray!

    BW :)
  • 1) today was a nsd :j:T

    2) lodger's room:
*hemmed the curtains I made 4 years ago and rehung them
    * washed & ironed the bedding
    * made the bed
    * collected a desk for the room that a friend was disposing of (free too woop woop)
    * sealed the door with gaffa tape so no nasty builder dust can ruin my hard work
A few more little bits to go, but very nearly there.

    3) all the 'office stuff' is currently in our bedroom, I've started to sort it, have a bit more to do this evening. Emailed hubby a list of things I think can be thrown away. He says keep it all. (don't say I could have just thrown it and he wouldn't have noticed, because these were things he would notice grrrrrrr)

    4) bills day tomorrow, so can update ynab and finalise my spending for the month.

Tomorrow involves another trip to the tip, a trip into school, just for a visit, and that's about it at the moment. I'm sure I will find plenty of other things to fill my time.

Have a great week people, all the best to those back at the chalk face this week.

  • Just a quick morning update.......

It's bills day today... Over £1000 has left my bank account so a good time have a look at the situation.

As you all know I've been using YNAB,
I get paid on the 20th of the month, so got paid on 20th August, which is really September's income. Of the bills that went out between 20th & 31st August only 1 has not been counted in August's expenditure, and I think I'll be able to pay septembers payment from this month's wage, rather than using money arriving on September 20th. (If you are following me, well done, I'm confusing myself)

This means op on the mortgage has taken a little bit of a back seat (apart from my regular op) until..... 1) I realign all the payments to months, rather than the half month.
    2) I manage to get 'a month ahead' in YNAB terms, so I'm spending last month's wages, rather than this months' wages.

When all this fiddling & facing has been done, the finances look quite healthy and as long as I don't go crazy on my personal spends, things are looking financially quite healthy.

We are looking at a slightly bigger bill for the loft than quoted due to the ceiling collapsing more than intended...... But I had saved a little more than we needed, so all should be good.

I'm offsetting spending on the lodger's room against the rent she will be paying. - standing at rand 7-9 weeks rent at the moment.
I've spent a little bit on boxes for archiving hubby's stuff in the loft (£66 on incredibly helpful boxes) but I should get that back when his sister (accountant) sorts the finances out.

My blow out was a steam mop & accompanying detergent. (What a thing to treat myself too!) but it is going to prove incredibly useful to try and get this house back to its proper state.

The rest of today involves a visit to the tip, popping into school to get all the updates loaded on my laptop, then it really don't know what.... Must not be led into mass amounts of spending...

Oops, a longer post than intended, but it helps get my thoughts clear.

  • The house insurance renewal arrived today. I rang up, because I never believe the price they give me, they knocked £70 off the premium bringing it to half the price I budgeted for. I've done one other quote, with our bank, they were offering £50 cash back. But it was £200 more than the renewal quote, and I can't be bothered trekking round. We had a break in 2 years ago, so had to have a new double glazed unit, locks, two bike, laptop, and they took the car. The current insurance company were just brilliant.

Added a friend to my car insurance policy, a bit more than I thought it would be, but with taking the reduced insurance premium into account, I'm still £200 up on where I was this morning.

Still waiting to find out how much extra the loft is going to be, but the spark has been today, the quote says to supply & fit 4x sockets and 1x light, but in reality it's 3x sockets and no light, because there is already a light in there. So I'm hoping I've got a bit of bargaining power there.

And... I went into school for an hour and didn't cry. A little wobble, but I brought myself round and managed to concentrate on a conversation for 3/4 of an hour. Another little success. Day off tomorrow, then two days straight, but have booked something to look forward to Thursday evening.

    Happy saving

  • My last day before going back to work. Anybody care to place a bet on how little sleep I'll get tonight???

So, what did I do with my last day?

    1) helped a friend out with Childcare, we watched Ivor the engine, then....

    2) child carer 2 came to pick up child, (too complicated to explain why this wasn't a bad idea, a child spending the day with two different friends helping out) we took him for 2nd breakfast in the local cafe, his second breakfast was chocolate cake, he's back to school this week too, so we said he could have a treat day. My 2nd breakfast was.... Well, it was too big a piece for him, so we halved it. (£7.50 for everyone's 2nd breakfast)

    3) picked up my fit for work note from the gp......

3a) diesel in car..... Didn't go over budget, hopefully it will last the month.

    4) Ald* shop £20, which considering there was only ingredients for 1 evening meal,I wasn't too happy with but..... Creme egg brownie has been requested for Saturday, I need to make a tray bake for a community BBQ on Sunday and I need to make 7 week's worth of play dough for school. Also, the fruit bowl is empty.....

    5) moped at home for a bit, stressed about work...

    6) paint shopping with a friend, she's decorating her bedroom, I've got the loft to decorate and now the hall, stairs and landing too. Love the paint I've chosen for hall, stairs etc, looks really traditional. Loft is more of a challenge, has anyone ever used light reflecting paint? Is it worth it?

    7) cake stop, but I did get most of it boxed up to bring home for my post work treat tomorrow (and on a 10% cash back offer on my debit card)

    8) bedroom furniture mooched for friend. Our tastes are soooooo different. Wouldn't choose anything she liked.

    9) sorted out for school, bag packed, lunch made, clothes ready, 2 pairs of shoes at the ready. I haven't worn 'proper school shoes' since about June last year. Not appropriate when working with 3 year olds, rubber toed shoes are a must, so proper shoes to start with, but rubber toed type ones ready for when I can't walk.

    And that's my day....

Spent a lot of money on cake, which means I'm going to have to shuffle money on ynab for spending money before the end of the month, but everything else is well within budget. (And if hubby remembers to put money in the joint account, we'll be laughing......)

Ohh, mortgage interest added & payment credited, a little tidy up done to make it a round figure. Looks like we are paying £250 a month capital off, which will have to do until I've got to my 'month ahead' on YNAB. (Off to update signature)

  • Today was a NSD.

    That's the good news.

Today was also really tough, mentally & physically and now I am shattered and brewing a migraine. So, I'm off to bed, I hope I sleep and I'll catch up on everyone's news tomorrow.
