Is it ok to wear red to a wedding?

It was said, years back, the you shouldn't get married in red, as it denoted the 'scarlet woman/probably not a virgin' concept (all red hat and no drawers, as the saying went).
I've just Googled as your post vaguely reminded me of a quote I'd read about 'Married in red, you will wish yourself dead' and got this:Married in white, you have chosen right.
Married in green, ashamed to be seen.
Married in grey, you'll go far away.
Married in red, you'll wish yourself dead.
Married in blue, your love will be true.
Married in yellow, you're ashamed of your fellow.
Married in black, you'll wish yourself back.
Married in pink, your spirits will sink.
Married in brown, you'll live out of town.
Married in pearl and you'll live in a whirl.
So basically everything except white and blue (and possibly grey, brown and pearl - whatever that is) is bad somehow!"A mind needs books as a sword needs a whetstone, if it is to keep its edge." - Tyrion LannisterMarried my best friend 1st November 2014Loose = the opposite of tight (eg "These trousers feel a little loose")Lose = the opposite of find/gain (eg "I'm going to lose weight this year")0 -
I was taught 'Red shoes, no knickers':eek:
My mum has some red shoes, and although I know she wouldn't go commando they still make me cringe slightly:o
I toyed with red shoes to go with the suit, but decided that sheer black tights and black shoes would elongate the leg and at 5ft 1" I need all the help I can get. I might go commando though!! No VPL;)0 -

My Granny used to describe women who thought they were better than the rest as "all fur coat and no knickers"....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
I wore red at my wedding but I also wore a jungle-print, bottom-skimming ra-ra skirted dress to a friend's wedding in the 80s so I'm no style guruMake £25 a day in April £0/£750 (March £584, February £602, January £883.66)
December £361.54, November £322.28, October £288.52, September £374.30, August £223.95, July £71.45, June £251.22, May£119.33, April £236.24, March £106.74, Feb £40.99, Jan £98.54) Total for 2017 - £2,495.100 -
There is no problem to wear red in wedding. I had wore many times. But if you are not comfortable then you can go for another option like blue and purple.0

I still use this expression
OP did your friend / colleague say why it was wrong to wear red?
Asian brides wear red and look fabulous so anyone else in red wouldn't look too great in comparison.
As someone else mentioned, for a white wedding the lady in red may stand out in the crowd and in the photos and only the bride should do that. I expect someone once stole the show wearing red and that was enough to start a rumours of infidelity, jealousy and images of babalon. :rotfl:The most potent weapon of the oppressor is the mind of the oppressed. I think the 'rule' is simple. Don't try to take focus from the bride.
So if the dress is not some body con va-va-voom hoiked cleavage job, then I don't think red is an issue (as long as it is not a colour in use for the wedding party)0 -

I agree with your simple rule!
On the second point, I know someone who had her wedding photos photo-shopped because of one female guest whose outfit wouldn't have been out-of-place in a red-light district.0 -
I agree with you both - wedding guest kit should tend towards the "elegant", rather than the "for sale" look....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0

I'm sure you're not, but that's why some people think it's rude. Ever heard the expression 'scarlet woman'?
I believe scarlet woman has it's origins in the book of Revelation, referring to the !!!!! of Babylon. As long as the pale rider doesn't show up it's probably all ok at a wedding.0
