For low(ish) users the only ones worth considering are:

White Mobile (on EE) (Free calls and texts within network), cheap calls to numbers abroad, 3p calls to landlines, 6p to other mobile networks, 5p texts to other mobile networks, data 2.5p per mb, free voicemail. Bundles are available for occasional months when you need more.

    or Three 3 2 1
3p calls, 2p texts, 1p data but no free calls within network.

PS Toggle is really only useful for when you go abroad (when it can be very useful indeed). Toggle numbers are expensive for other users to call, so if you want your friends to keep talking to you, avoid Toggle (except for trips abroad)

Slightly too much assumption there, perhaps.

It is potentially just as useful here, with cheap rates to UK and other countries.

Toggle numbers are not expensive for everyone to call. Most will pay the same as any other mobile.

T-mobile excluded Lycamobile numbers from inclusive minute bundles some time ago. I don't know if this is still true.

I've seen more than one person speculate that's no longer the case for T-mobile, but given that this may be no more reliable than other comments some people are making recently (such as recommending to use a 3 SIM in a non 3g phone - which won't work), it would be worth someone actually checking.

    I can't check it myself.

My Toggle SIM has had my old O2 number ported to it. This makes it chargeable by other providers at the same rates as an O2 number . Very easy to arrange, and it removes all doubt.

Giffgaff is good and you can get virtually free usage with them too by posting a few times in their forum then using your payback as airtime credit. This is paid out twice per year.

I was considering GiffGaff but when I did a company check I am not sure if they will be the next one going under. The net worth is -£63.5m and it is in decline although they have £11.8m in cash and they are owned by O2.

That doesn't mean it's going under, or in decline.

Plenty of start-up companies need finance to get going, from bank loans or shareholder funds or both.

Investing a larger amount of money, as O2 has done, is done on the basis of getting a larger return in the long run, and giffgaff is still growing.

To be clear the investor is Telefonica not 02, Telefonica own 02 and it is a direct subsidiary of Telefonica not 02. It is simply the 02 network that carries the GG business.

Ocado still trade on a negative asset value due to start-up costs, have not made a profit yet still very expensive share price.
I started with nothing and I am proud to say I still have most of it left.

Giffgaff is owned by the same group that owns o2. They will keep it going. Also giffgaff gets hard cash coming in and isn't dependant on pennies from advertisers.

People don't realise it but banner ad clicks outside of Adsense/Adwords cost pennies. Ovivo was probably getting 10p per click from their advertisers. So there was no way to sustain the service.

But no matter what happens you will get a chance to port your number out of the network so no reason to be scared about switching to them.

I do not use the calls or texts much. I believe the most calls I make per month is 50mins and 30 texts. Most of my usage is data from facebook so I have decided to jump onto a strictly pay as you go model and use a mifi device for data.

I can get data bundles for very cheap from work so I'll just use those. :rotfl:

Yup, many companies have negative net values. What sets them apart is that the good companies will have investor confidence and the bad ones will not. So the bad ones get their credit pulled and investors demand their money back which crumbles the house of cards.

Also negative value takes into fact directors loans and other debts. E.g. telefonica might have put in £100M loans to GG. So that will make GG values as -£100M.

GG could be on track and paying back £2M each month. So you really need to get a full credit report and comprehensive accounts to understand the state of affairs of the company.

So a Three 321 sim is like the old PAYG deals, if I get one then top up with £10 and only use it for data at 1p/mb then I effectively get 1000mb and there is no time limit?
Can I use it for that - just data?

I only want a sim for data use for email and occasional web browsing/gps mapping use and have no need for voice as I have a works phone for that.

So to me its either giffgaff with a £5/pm data pack or a 321.
Three is not such a great signal round here, neither is vodaphone tbh, but in the house I'd use wifi and only really want it when out & about/at work where the signal is usually much better.

    Any advice?

Yes, the credit is non-expiring (with the minimum use proviso). Calls/texts/data are subtracted at 3p/2p/1p with no other charges involved.
