I have ordered 2 white mobile sim cards. They offer free calls & texts to other white sims. That will do for now and hopefully won't be too long to arriveLife is a coin, you can spend it anyway you wish, but you can only spend it once.
Go as far as you can see, and when you get there you'll see further.

I would definitely look at Three. Their Feel at Home offering allows you to use your inclusive bundle in a number of countries including the US (though only applies to Italy, Austria, Sweden and Denmark within Europe currently; EU capped charges apply elsewhere).
You'll need to be on a pay monthly contract to benefit from that; the cheapest SIM only is £6.90/month (for a 12 month contract with 200 mins, 5000 texts and 500MB). Out of bundle charges are higher than they would be at home, but still pretty reasonable as roaming charges go. [Edit: It looks like pay-as-you-go add-on bundles also qualify, which if true probably makes this even more attractive to low users who regularly travel overseas.]
Worth noting though that standard roaming charges apply for calls and texts to non-UK numbers, including local calls to the country/areas you are in.
I would choose Three myself were it not for zero coverage at home; unfortunately we're limited to services running on the O2 or Vodafone networks.
As far as I can tell the "feel at home" does not do what we want,
It only uses inclusive mins for calls/text to the UK
local calls seem to be at the normal roaming rate.
calls between 3 mobiles both roaming looks like the receiver will pay the incoming roaming rate.0 -
For Light user (Dad): 321 with Three if you have a 3G phone.
Otherwise Asda/Sainsburys mobile basic call rates undercut the main networks inc Giffgaff at 8p per min calls, 4p a txt.
It's promoted as a low cost roaming SIM (I've used mine in Switzerland and the USA) offering low cost calls in the UK and to/from a number of markets.0 -

Does anyone know whether Sainsburys mobile credit expires after 30 days? (couldn't find the answer on their website). I'm looking for something for my Dad (2G-only phone) who makes approx. 3 calls per year.0 -
Toggle at 3p/min to landlines and mobiles? http://www.togglemobile.co.uk/home/en

Mentioned earlier in thread low user might be put off by minimum top up of £20 and i believe some networks dont include their numbers in inclusive minutes. But ok if you port number that originated elsewhere.0 -

From their T&C 180 days.
7.6 If we suspend or disconnect the SIM because it’s not been used for 180 days, if you ask us (within 90 days of the suspension) we can reconnect the services and you’ll be able to use any credit you had on your account prior to the suspension. If you’ve not used the services for 270 continuous days we won’t be able to re-credit your account. Where the services are suspended (for any reason) we may have to give you a new mobile number and SIM before we can reconnect you.0 -

Yes it allows you to use your UK plan allowance or Add-on allowance, just as if you were at home, to call and text the UK and get online right across the USA, as well as in Austria, Australia, Denmark, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Italy, Macau, the Republic of Ireland, Sri Lanka and Sweden.
Your possibly find https://www.togglemobile.co.uk a better bet for your needs.0 -
I was considering GiffGaff but when I did a company check I am not sure if they will be the next one going under. The net worth is -£63.5m and it is in decline although they have £11.8m in cash and they are owned by O2.

Doubt if their owners would let them go to wall.
But not competive for low users. Ok for bundles or if you want FREE freephone access,0
