I've always wished I was the physical, outdoor type, who liked gardening .... it's a high rate of pay for what's essentially "not much work". But I'm a weak wuss who hates creepy crawlies and worms.

If I'd liked gardening I'd have probably done some landscaping courses etc and now ponced about doing garden design and stuff.

We have a funnel web in our back garden. They don't come much creepier or crawlier than that!

    4 down 11 to go.

Waiting etc. aside, how are you feeling Gen? How are your family?

I feel fine although since the treatment started I've been in constant pain in my neck and ear. That could just be coincidence though.

The waiting room is a surprisingly jolly place. Everyone is very friendly and it's a good place to tell your cancer story as you don't get any of the stupid people reactions.

I'm starting to get quite tired which can be a side effect but again might be coincidence or just in my mind or just my normal state of being: I have a very stressful job, 2 kids and a depressed wife. Tiredness goes with the territory.

I think I'm starting to get radiation burns. The area feels hot all the time. I'm slithering on the cream and I've got an aloe vera plant outside my front door I can also use.

Mrs Generali is a little mad at me for getting sick. I'm meant to be the bombproof one so I've let her down.

The Boy is a bit scared and doesn't really want to know about it. The Girl seems fine with it but it's hard to tell with her I think. She's great at communicating what she wants but less good at saying what she feels. I'll take her out for a hot chocolate and a chat over the long weekend I think.

My Mum's mum died of lung cancer. She hates it. My sister puts on that 'must be cheerful yet sympathetic' voice, the aural equivalent of the Mac Nod (that's the slow nod with the tilted head as preferred by the MacMillan nurse). My dad's been dead the best part of a decade so I doubt that he cares much!

It's worth considering that some people (e.g. me) react violently when told to sleep in a tent.

    violently in what way? why?
...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.

Do tell the medics about the pains. Don't just suffer in silence.

If you are in pain, try a mindfulness meditation. http://www.mentalhealth.org.uk/help-information/podcasts/mindfulness-10-minute/?view=Standard

Lots of people find it helps, and it's quite mainstream these days - hardly dotty at all! You can even get it on the NHS.

That also gives you something to do when strapped in the machine.

I can understand your wife being cross with you, actually. I don't cope at all well with my DW being ill. I do all I can to get her better, and then I get cross when it doesn't happen instantly.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

The violently bit was a joke. I hate camping though. I like warm showers and nice carpets. Oh and decent food. Why is it campists eat so appallingly?

Thanks. I've been looking for a recommendation for a mindfulness thing.

Hey Gen, glad another one is out of the way. You've got a 3 day weekend. Anything special on the agenda, like cello recitals or bread baking with the girl?

Not long now until the number to go is less than the number you've endured.

I'm hoping your skin will feel a little less burned after three days off, but have no idea how these things work. Sending you good vibes though.

To answer your question, I hate mushrooms with a passion. Never felt the urge to knowingly and willingly eat fungus.

Bananas on the other hand. I love them.
My sentiments exactly, although bananas must be firm and under-ripe. DH doesn't like bananas (although he loves mushrooms) so quite a few get wasted. I don't like them any other way than raw - same with apples; I love tasty apples but am not keen on them cooked.
Celery I'll eat raw but hate cooked.
    I think it's partly a texture thing.

My manager nominated me for Outstanding Team Member, and I've won the regional bit
    Well done!

I caused a furore and trouble for the manager in one contracting job I had. I was there for an initial 3 months, then kept for the next 3 months' stage too. They had staff awards and I was nominated for an "Above and Beyond the Call of Duty" effort award. The row started when the panel saw it as it was "for staff", not for contractors....

First I knew of it was when I was taken into a private meeting and given a letter and a mousemat and told that I'd been nominated but hadn't been allowed to win as it'd have caused staff problems :)

I love your description of the waiting room! :)

Is the MacMillan nurse helpful? Because your description of your family members doesn't say much about them supporting you.

Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.
