I love "Jerusalem". Doesn't sound very English initially to the outsider.

We sang it at our wedding, with the rugby connotation and being in Elgar country. Ok, maybe more the rugby connotation. We had red roses and the tables were named after our world cup winning heroes. 10 years in May.

We had a Welsh vicar when my daughter was christened. I asked for one of the hymns to be Jerusalem. Instead we got this.

It was pretty funny with hindsight.

I can sort of speed read. I can't do 1,000 words a minute but I can read properly at about 400wpm and maybe skim at 5-600wpm. It is incredibly useful, well worth time invested in learning how to do it.

Basically you force yourself to stop going back to re-read the past few words you already read. What tends to happen is you read maybe 10 words then go back and read the previous 5 again or so. Also, rather than flow your eyes across every word you maybe move your eyes to 3 points on each line and rely on your peripheral vision to deal with the rest.

The Generalissimos' school has a school song, sung to the tune of Waltzing Matilda:

    "Our school xxx,
    Good old xxx,
We are the school that's making its mark.
In blue and gold we never fold
In anything we try to do
We're proud of our school at xxx"

For those with a lot of reading you can train yourself to read superfast.

Normal reading speed is 250-ish words per minute; with this it seems easy to increase this to 600wpm.
Try it out, 'click above to learn how to spritz', and increase the wpm speed bit by bit.

    Sciencey explanation in there too.

550 had some strange words, better the second time, but 600 was okay. I have a black box imprinred in front of m eyes like you get from a flash. I 'm partially blinded! They might need to fix that.

    Oh health update.

There are no signs of infection in the cut. My brain feels like I've just sat through a 15 hour lecture on gravity waves though and I keep walking into things.

I can perform physical exercise for about 5 minutes but then need to sit down. No way I can drive. I have a memory that lasts about as long as a particularly stupid goldfish with amnesia.

I can still cook just fine although I have to take extra care when chopping things up. I jointed a chicken (quite a technical task to do properly) just fine yesterday.

I am extremely short tempered though.

I'm trying to be sensible. For example, I'm taking Panadeine Forte: 1000mg of paracetamol and 60mg of codeine 4 times a day. I'm writing down the time that I'm taking it so I don't accidentally overdose. I'm also doing the Japanese bath thing where you have a thorough shower and then bathe in clean water afterwards. I might go for a massage this afternoon: the health insurance pays for $250 of massages and other alternative therapies each year. Normally I save them for when I'm doing proper training on the bike but that's something that looks a while off so I might as well use them for this.

    This is horrible.
  • Poor old Gen - hope you feel better very soon indeed.

    Poor Gen.

Some of those effects look sound like they could be a direct result of the anesthetic.

In pain killing terms, you aren't taking that much - paracetamol/ codeine are pretty low on the list. After a fairly minor op I was on diclofenic for a week.

Gen, it sounds pants. Not being able to get one's brain to think and remember properly is particularly frustrating, I think.

    Have another dodgy hug: :grouphug:

Glad about the "no infection" bit, though. :)

Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

Oh dear! The "fractal shots" are quite stunning but might not be totally suitable for anyone prone to motion sickness.
Have you been to see "Gravity" in 3D yet?
I've not, and I'm pretty disoriented on fairground rides. Wondering what I'd be letting myself in for. Mrs Zag loves that kind of thing.:)

Apart from saying 'really' in the same sentence twice and the reporter not quite understanding me, can you see what I did with my choice of words at the end of the quote? ;)
