What other course are you 2 doing? Is it the same one?
I doubt it. The one I am doing is about libraries. I have to do it now as it isn't being rerun.
I don't know about Nikks, but I am guessing that her other studies relate to her PhD.Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Most moles are not cancerous, any doubts, please check next time you visit your GP.

That one is so clever.
...he said as he hastened to put out the cat, the wine, his cigar, and the lamps...
and best of all:
He said "What in heaven?" as she made no reply, up her mind, and a dash for the door.
I love the way Flanders crafts the words together, and it was one of my favourites as a kid when I had no idea what it was about - although I didn't think it was about cake like Flanders's nephew (and Swann!). But, now I'm grown up, I realise that it's about date rape, and that spoils my enjoyment of the word-smithing. It's odd, isn't it, that in that era, so much more prudish than ours in so many ways, it was OK for them to write both that one and the Tongan one, and everybody just thought it was funny?
I like First and Second Law (obviously) and Misalliance and Ill Wind and The Sloth and Vanessa. Well, and lots of the others too.
I agree that it's very clever, and Flanders is, too, a wonderful user of words.
Even though i agree about the date rape aspect, I do still like Madeira, somewhat against my will for the reasons you set out!
I think there are some clues in the Madeira song for the reason why she doesn't get much sympathy - there's more than a hint that she was asking for trouble, don't you think?
She lowered her standards by raising her glass, Her courage, her eyes-and his hopes
She was already behaving badly there, I think. And there's the lines earlier,
Unaware of the wiles of the snake in the grass, Of the fate of the maiden who topes,
And the warning from her mother she remembers too late.
I think that's partly the attitude, don't you?
I also love "Misalliance"....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -
I don't know if anyone else has a kindle fire, but today's free app is a scientific calculator for those that do.Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Never let it be said that I don't know how to have fun!
It probably should be said that I'm not sure I can remember how to differentiate!
Couldn't find anything linked to PhD otherwise I'd definitely have signed up for it. This is more for what pays the mortgage.0 -
Apart from saying 'really' in the same sentence twice and the reporter not quite understanding me, can you see what I did with my choice of words at the end of the quote?

She's in the other paper too.

It's like the reporter has a form of 'really' Tourettes. The word is used half a dozen times in a 400 (max) word article!0 -

Only really good wordsmiths for the town's premier free newspaper. I thought the other paper missed the more obvious pun of 'run a mile'. Very disappointed.Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

Paying the mortgage is good! That second one looks really tough Nikks. DH would like it, but I'm not going to show him as he's signed up to one with Berkeley that clashes, to learn to play the guitar.
If it is more important to do the modelling one, could you pick up the Ariely one again later in the year? Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? ...you do know you don't have to keep us up to date if you don't want to, I had a relative go through something similar recently and they set up a news email address and comm'd on their own terms with the understanding that that meant that everyone should leave them in peace.
I find this quite a simple way to do it because a simple click on the 'Thanks' button to someone I speak to most days says far more than:
"Thank you person [who hasn't spoken to me for 28 years] from Facebook. Your previous utter lack of concern of any part of my adult life until now shows a huge and hitherto unrecognised deeply loving relationship. I look forward to us ignoring each other other for another few decades except your occasional requests to help me advance you to another level on a computer game".0
