I can do that for you :) I was born in London but my family are from Aberdeenshire.

Is there anything you can't do?:p
It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.

I'd go for the Marantz pairing myself.

Then perhaps a pair of these:

For speaker cable, get the sort of electrical cable that is used for ceiling lights. The phono leads that come in the box will be just fine too.

If you're going to put the speakers on a shelf, use those little sticky pads to attach them. The best of all is to used speaker stands filled with builder's sand with spikes on the bottom.

Off to hospital now. Love to all!!!!

Downside is I need bigger. A micro system is out owing to the fact a turntable is required.

Been looking at richer sounds website.
    Quite like this turntable:

    2 options for an amp:

    but I think I prefer:

which leaves the cd player. Again, narrowed down to 2 options:

We have a previous version of that Pioneer amp jelly, it's fine. Bought because we were reusing a lot of Pioneer kit so thought it would be easier to set up. We use it with Mordant short speakers. We also run our home cinema system through it on a different output. Can't speak for the functionality of that one though. Iirc our one didn't have a phono output though as was seen as too old fashioned, a bit like having a lighter socket in a car.

I hasten to add I don't use it as it is so bloody complicated.

Yeah but I don't want to do that until the mortgage valuation has been done in case they come back with a whacky valuation 100k below the asking price or something nuts like that.

Interesting. We thought the other way round - didn't want to waste money on mortgage fees and valuation if the place was falling down.

    I've done nothing yet.
With the move impending, I'm thinking of putting some tomato seeds into the trays in the next 2 weeks. I might not grow anything else (lettuce aside) this year.

So the housewarming is almost sorted, cool music and salad. Just need the BBQ and alcohol. We could bring bottles.

    Touche! :D

I'm reminded of when I bumped into an old friend, who had trained to be a teacher. We went & saw his parents (they didn't remember me at first). When it became clear who I was, we sat chatting, & it got mentioned I worked in a college.

"Oh, are you a teacher too?" they asked.

    "No. I've got a proper job" I replied.:D

    :rotfl:

I usually refer to them as "normal jobs".

TBH, although I appreciate the holidays - as much for the "not having to organise childcare" aspect as the "not having to go to work" aspect - they weren't any part of my motivation for becoming a teacher. It actually went more like this:

"I have spent all this time trying to get a DPhil (ie Oxford PhD) because I thought I wanted a research career but actually the research lifestyle doesn't suit me and is making me miserable. My husband isn't earning much, we are about to lose our entitlement to a student flat when I finish my 3rd year post-grad, and my experiment still doesn't work so I'm nowhere near writing up yet. I need to think of something I can do, part-time, without moving away from Oxford, without doing any further training, that will earn enough money to keep us afloat while I carry on trying to get enough results to write up. Oh no, what shall I do? Panic panic panic."

Then I met a bloke at a party who had tried to get onto a PGCE but for complicated reasons couldn't get funding for it. He told me he was thinking of teaching in a private school where they wouldn't mind him not having a teaching qualification if he had a good degree and seemed to have the interpersonal skills required.

Lightbulb! If he can do that, I can, I thought. Cue applications for part-time teaching jobs in Oxford. I had no expectation of enjoying the job or wanting to stick in it for a career. My confidence in my own ability to pick a career was pretty much non-existent, but I thought teaching might tide us over while I finished getting doctorified and decided what to do with my life.

So I began the job and discovered it's where I belong. I'm good at it, I enjoy it, and there are always jobs available in a shortage subject like mine. So here I am, still teaching 20 years later. :)

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.
    :)

Out of surgery and feeling pretty good. I'm quite woozy and I have a funny feeling that my neck is going to hurt a lot when the lical wears off (I had local and general anaesthetic). I've been prescribed panaforte, a strongish codeine based pain killer.

My throat hurts where they had a breathing tube down it and I am absolutely bloody starving.

All in all I'm pretty happy. Looking forward to a snooze on the sofa this evening.
