Remember you most like likely don't listen in a sound prof booth, Things like blinds rather than curtains and wood/laminate loos rather than carpet will make a huge differemce.

Try having in an old fashioned pub vs one with wood floors and large windows.

This chat about sound systems reminds me of the Flanders and Swann song "High Fidelity":

Who made this circuit up for you, anyway? Bought it in a shop? Oooh, what a horrible shoddy job they fobbed you off with with.

Surprised they let you have it in this room anyway, the acoustics are all wrong. If you raise the ceiling four feet... put the fireplace from that wall to that wall... you'll still only get the stereophonic effect if you sit in the bottom of that cupboard.

...much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.

An interesting concept; can't see it catching on, though!

I remember when he got roasted on 8 out of 10 cats following the revelation.

Then I met a bloke at a party who had tried to get onto a PGCE but for complicated reasons couldn't get funding for it. He told me he was thinking of teaching in a private school where they wouldn't mind him not having a teaching qualification if he had a good degree and seemed to have the interpersonal skills required.

Lightbulb! If he can do that, I can, I thought. Cue applications for part-time teaching jobs in Oxford. I had no expectation of enjoying the job or wanting to stick in it for a career. My confidence in my own ability to pick a career was pretty much non-existent, but I thought teaching might tide us over while I finished getting doctorified and decided what to do with my life.

So I began the job and discovered it's where I belong. I'm good at it, I enjoy it, and there are always jobs available in a shortage subject like mine. So here I am, still teaching 20 years later.

    Did you ever get QTS?
