    Did you ever get QTS?

I know people who don't have QTS and getting a job in a state school is possible, but they make you jump through many hoops and can pay you a much lower rate of pay for a long period of time. Your first year or two may be treated as probationary.

Sounds like a lot of hassle. If you like your job, I'd be in no rush to move.

To be honest I think you're better off teaching in an independent school anyway. Lots of people with QTS are either leaving state schools or wishing they could at the moment (years of no pay rises, more work, and worse treatment does that to you ).

We've bought quite a lot from Richer Sounds jelly and always been happy. They employ total nerds who know what they are talking about and are happy to give advice. Some of the stuff that they sell is from other companies owned by Richer himself, but it is good quality too. Check out their home cinema system by Cambridge Audio while you are there if it is set up in one of their booths. My bil has the Bose system, the CA is substantially cheaper and sounds better.
Feedback online & offline is to a high standard. I'll definitely be paying them a visit.
It's getting harder & harder to keep the government in the manner to which they have become accustomed.

Oooo, an NP round the corner from me:)

PM me if you're ever coming Liverpool way - we could have a North West Meet-up. :j Or we could meet part way in IKEA for a cooked breakfast... Except despite my weakness for a Full English I have never managed to get there early enough to be able to have their breakfast. :rotfl:

This is the email I sent to my colleagues at work. I am getting really tired now so, while I've tried to answer everyone individually so far, I will try to send more general stuff for the next few days:

Glad to hear you have come through the op OK and are still relatively pain free - long may that last! :) Save your precious energy for healing. :) Hope you manage to get a good night's sleep. Hugs from grey, damp and miserable Liverpool. ;)
This chat about sound systems reminds me of the Flanders and Swann song "High Fidelity"

Or try this for the sound. Bit crackly - must have been recorded off vinyl.

I love Flanders and Swan - we used to sing The Hippopotamus Song to the DDs when they were little. :) I wonder if they will sing it to their kidliewinks!

I will do that, just heading out of work and back home to sunny Runcorn as we speak. Old Town, not new town, she said sniffily;)

My parents sung Flanders and Swann to us; my grandmother joined in too. It was one of our favourite records.
I got a cd of them not long ago.
We (or at least I, as DH doesn't sing) sung F&S to our children too. Remains to be seen if they have children, but I'm certainly happy to sing their songs to any grandchildren I may have (scary thought!)

(will delete) my family come from 'old' Hemel Hempstead, so I know exactly what you mean. My family can be traced in the area from the 1640s, so definitely not new town. When it was designated a new town, it already had c30,000 living there. Gutted that it couldn't have stayed as was and been another Berkhamsted, Tring or Harpenden. The topography is lovely, as are the old building, they just stuck a sixties monstrosity on top of it.

LOL is that a Posh Alert? We have got totally lost a couple of times in Runcorn when OH wasn't concentrating enough coming home from London. Years ago now when OH took vol redundancy from an IT job he took a year out (wouldn't get away with that nowadays!) and we spent a lot of time exploring along the Mersey, both sides, trying to get to the river at as many places as possible. There's some *very* strange places around, remember very strange place where I think maybe they dump the dredgings from the river, lots of dead trees. And then there's the chemical works where surprisingly we managed to drive down to the river, mind you it was a Sunday, and suspect it's rather more closely watched nowadays. One of these days we plan to take the trip up the Mersey and Manchester Ship Canal - in fact I think I might shoot off and try and check dates now!

    Hemel Hempstead

My father was supposed to go and work in Hemel Hempstead when I was 13, we were going to have a new build in St Albans. But then his company was taken over so we ended up moving to West Kirby (on the Wirral, I hate the place! Snob City!) and he worked in Liverpool instead. My mother never liked Liverpool - suspect she thought it was "common". I escaped to this side of the Mersey as soon as I could, just after my 21st birthday. Back in those days 21 was age of majority, and I damn near missed my own 21st party because of that as they weren't going to let me stay over at OH's parents' house because "You're not 21 YET!" until OH's Dad phoned and lied that he and OH's Mum would be there! LOL, it was only about 10 days before my birthday!
