Unless the school decides to ban the debating society....

Youngest is actually very good at debating surprisingly but he and his friends are increasingly annoyed that they are not allowed to have a debating society at school, the powers that be have a thing about students having their own minds

There always used to be one (James was part of it) but the academy put a stop to it as they were worried about the issues that could be discussed (possibility of it being anti academy) and if that would lead to an uprising amongst the students.

They also got rid of the student councils.....

They promote freedom of thought but only if it is their idea of freedom of thought aka towing the party line, the academy is wonderful, the academy is perfect etc etc etc

That all just sounds completely half-witted. No half-decent school needs to worry about school councils or debating societies being subversive!

It must drive you to distraction, that type of attitude.

NDG, I have emailed you at the email address you were using in October, so I hope you haven't changed email addresses.

To the people who were asking about DD's hair... it is long (waist length) and blonde - although much blonder at the ends than the roots. She's hoping it will lighten over the summer as it did last year. She's clearly en route from blonde toddler to mousey brown adult, just like my mother and I both did.

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

Yorkie, I think you might have read that as PN implying your post was full of "I" meaning "full of ego / me / etc".

I'm 99% certain PN meant it in terms of "you don't sound as if you're cooking for 6 every night, so perhaps X is a solution".

Yes, that was my misunderstanding and thanks PN for your clarification. The worktop option hadn't occurred to me at all so I'm really grateful for the suggestion. The worktops are 7' in total so it might not be viable, but I will look carefully! You're right that I live alone and only use the full oven at Christmas when it's completely full with cooking for family :T (Though my large Le Creuset casserole dish for making lots of portions of singleton stew is pretty large ... )

Just back from walking the dog amongst a sea of blue bells and then along a disused railway track.

    It was lovely.

I know it well. Do you know the footpath that runs through an avenue of trees towards the school at m stoke? My parents planted those trees when I was in my teens.

We have a full size oven with a combined oven micro above and also a combi halogen on the worktop. In 3 years we have never used the full size oven. :o
    I think....

I've had the same email address since June 1996, so I'm fairly sure it'll arrive (-:

This does not sound great to me. Ultimately it will be counter-productive too. If you don't allow voices of dissent to point out what is wrong with something, then it becomes 'right' and no effort is put into addressing problems. They could sleepwalk into being a failing school without realising (worst case scenario of course).

The first sign my eyes were going was night driving in retrospect.

I'd heard that, so raised it at my last medical. Doc said they're fine and better than most my age, and slight deterioration in night vision is a normal part of ageing.

Still drive/fly at night with no issues at all other than noticing it takes slightly longer to adjust between light levels, hence being careful not to glance at headlights, etc. The issue isn't (yet) noticeably worse night vision once they've adjusted, just that it takes them longer to adjust, if that makes sense, although the worse night vision seems inevitable eventually.

Apparently loss of night vision is a big issue in the accident stats with older drivers, but this is one area where in-car technology is progressing rapidly with night vision cameras/sensors integrated with HUD's.

It's quite an interesting topic actually..... We're probably not all that far away from car mounted sensors sending night vision images to google glass or similar, so enhancing the ability to see at night when driving for almost anyone. You could also see that being adapted for other sight issues, distance vision, etc.

Interesting..........(and doesn't necessarily mirror my views)

Hmmm... Am I alone in thinking the other semi-final is stronger?

I'm hopeful that we're pretty close to me being able to put my feet up and enjoy some cheese and biccies with a glass of port as my car drives me to my destination.

Although presumably the riding only lightens the bits that are long enough to come out below the helmet???

My dad tells me that there's something in human eye lenses that's there to block out the UV, but which gradually goes brown with age, leading to worse night vision and also less distinct colour vision. His night vision and colour vision are now better than they've been for about 50 years, because he got cataracts so had his lenses replaced with plastic ones that are completely clear and colourless.
