Does it matter if the oven sticks out a bit?

Good point - might not attach to the cupboard framework but might get away with it.
That was all "I", "I", "I" .... might I suggest that if you don't use the oven for much, you just get a combination oven and leave it at that?

I wouldn't have an oven if I designed a kitchen from scratch..... a toaster oven, or combination oven's more than adequate for most people who use the term "I" all the time.

Really not sure how to take this post, PN, with the references to "I", "I", "I". Could you clarify, please? If some boundary has been overstepped by my initial post, it needs explaining to me as am a bit baffled :o

Suggestion of a combination oven is appreciated :)

I think PN meant that it sounds like you cook mainly for yourself, therefore do you need a big oven at all or would a combi on the worktop suffice?

    PN: How close was I?

I am single, I live alone, nobody ever comes round, I don't cook meals, I don't cook for people, I don't entertain. It's "I" here.

A full sized oven's usually much bigger than I'd need. A whole oven on to bake one potato, or one pie. The most I ever cook, volume wise, would be a tray of oven chips and a pie. Therefore, a full sized oven just seems a waste of space - and puts me off turning it on to heat up one thing.

So, rather than going to the hassle of all that wiring and replacing, sourcing etc... and the cost - if you live alone, is it worthwhile giving a good toaster oven a go..... if you've got the worktop space for it that is. One of the other things that often goes with an "I" household is dinky kitchens :)

You can use those table top ovens to cook a full Sunday roast - cook the meat and take it out to rest while you're doing the roasties.... and/or even fit the roasties at the bottom. So it's doable if you don't plan on doing a full roast as the norm.

Spot on. Although I appreciate that going down that route is in itself an issue. Firstly there's the mindset shift to not having "a full/proper oven", then there's the fact that (ultimately) you're putting off doing something that you might have to do anyway at some future point when you want to sell the house.

But, it can be used "for now" until all the other stuff's sorted at some future point (be that 3 months, a year, or longer).

Yorkie, I think you might have read that as PN implying your post was full of "I" meaning "full of ego / me / etc".

I'm 99% certain PN meant it in terms of "you don't sound as if you're cooking for 6 every night, so perhaps X is a solution".

Chess is pretty much free. Once you've bought a board and pieces, you don't need to spend a single penny on it thereafter. Debating at school is free, too. Sailing, riding and so forth are a bit more expensive, admittedly.

Unless the school decides to ban the debating society....

Youngest is actually very good at debating surprisingly but he and his friends are increasingly annoyed that they are not allowed to have a debating society at school, the powers that be have a thing about students having their own minds

There always used to be one (James was part of it) but the academy put a stop to it as they were worried about the issues that could be discussed (possibility of it being anti academy) and if that would lead to an uprising amongst the students.

They also got rid of the student councils.....

They promote freedom of thought but only if it is their idea of freedom of thought aka towing the party line, the academy is wonderful, the academy is perfect etc etc etc
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

    Bright, sunny, cloudless/blue sky morning.

Just back from walking the dog amongst a sea of blue bells and then along a disused railway track.

    It was lovely.

Yes, that's how I read it too. But I think I would have misunderstood it if I didn't know PN's posting style and views on kitchens (and on being single).

Thank you. DD has moved the hamster cage upstairs for safety. The dog is scared of the open treaded stairs, so there's no risk of her coming up.

DD is playing with the dog now, but is unimpressed that the dog clearly prefers me. ;)

There are so many things wrong with the way that school is managed that I don't know where to begin.

What's the latest on Youngest's support?

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.
