If I were ever looking for a new front door, I'd start with a range like this: http://www.valuedoorsuk.co.uk/high-security-range-sc_11.html

I'd be thinking a door's for security first, looking nice second.

In order to get out of the inertia of not getting these things sorted (e.g. finding builders to quote, getting quotes, choosing one, getting the work actually done) I'm concentrating on the pretty bits. I know that's not the most important bit :o

Door-wise I want a wooden door. I'll spend time making sure it's as secure as I can. But I'd like to like the look of it too.

Pastures, if you're worried about security, you can fit London bars (Yale style locks) or Birmingham bars (flush) to any door. If you want to you can add a couple of manual multi-points and a bump-proof lock. You can do all of that for about £50-60.

When you say "you can", you have to substitute those words for "you can find a relevant, affordable, professional".

I have never heard of the things in your post.

I'd probably prefer to take my chances with a secure uPVC one and leave "wood" to be restricted to the 2x4 or baseball bat just inside :)

I've added links. Birmingham bars are easy to fit. I could do it. The rest could be done with some basic DIY skills.

You being able to do it doesn't mean everybody else can :)

I've no DIY experience whatsoever, no tools - and I am 100% incompetent too. It'd be a complete disaster :)

I'll get a little man in.......

They are Southampton I think.....shall we crash their meet? we could meet at mine, drive down and join them?

(PN and her gaggle of friends who will try not to overwhelm her.)

    Yes please :D
    Have spirit and Lydia met?

No, but I'd like to. :)
Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. (Link permitted by forum team)
Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.
    :)

Quite agree you want a nice hard wood door and i would get a glazed one unless there is another window for the hall.our door is hardwood but stained brown, I want it repainted in shiny black....another 'want' for when we win the lottery

3 weeks to SA on BA starting in London £1474 per person in economy. Same flights in business class starting in Amsterdam 1292?!

We were quoted the same price for premium economy as economy on the leg to Dubai.

    Premium economy it is then!

Apologies to Lydia/PN, but to report that I've just repotted my tomatoes.

Didn't expect them to sprout so quickly. Thought they'd last in the trays til the move, but they're 2+ weeks ahead of where I'd expect. :o

Debated planting lettuce, & decided to give it until next weekend for that.

I enjoy gardening vicariously through you lot :)
