Just to confuse you a bit more, i went to our local Ikea this morning and after my free coffee I thought I'll go and have a look at the offending Benno TV bench.
Now it gets interesting, there were two on display, both had labels stuck on them saying this supports 30kg.
The swing ticket (product description) stated supports 40kg.
A the bottom there was no warehouse location but rather an ask staff for assistance label.
As I said in an earlier post i almost bought one the other week so I knew where they were. The only thing left in the warehouse was the bay label...no product.

Worse was yet to come there were no hotdogs!!
That gum you like is coming back in style.

No, still nothing. I phoned CS this morning and they told me I was 'down for a call today' and that I shouldn't have been told I would be called within 12 working hours as there was no way I would have been called during that time.

So I stayed in all Tuesday/Wed & 75% of Thursday for nothing and the time I was out on Thursday, I had someone in the house to take the call if it came and to explain I would only be gone for a very short time and to ask if they could call back in half an hour.

I've stayed in all day today but nothing yet and I have to go to the dentist at 4pm.

I'm obviously just meant to accept things as they are and not complain about anything. I'm one of 'those' people who things go wrong for on a regular basis.

I had a complaint with Apple too and after getting nowhere with their cs people on the phone, I wrote to them with a very detailed outline of my complaint. I've just had a letter this morning from them asking me to phone their 0870 customer service number so we can discuss my complaint. I'm sure if they were that interested in helping me they could easily have looked in their computer files and accessed my phone number which they have on record and phoned me themselves.

    I tell you if I didn't laugh, I'd cry.

I'm off to find a website that tells you how to opt out of the modern world and how to construct a home from cardboard and the like.

I know exactly how you feel. I am off to Marrakech on Monday, and would be quite happy to never return! x

    Hi.
I have used an ikea table [at cost of £8, with one screw holding each leg on, for the last 8 years] for a multitude of different items, including a massive TV, video, dvd, stereo equipment. The TV is the heaviest i have known [it is being freecycled tomorrow so am very aware of the weight of it]; with zero problems.
Also, all manufacturers use a safety factor, which means they publish the max weights at either a half or a third of what it will really hold. It is designed into practically everything.

Also - if you hadn't browsed, you would have had 2 scenarios:

Either you would never have known; or you would have put your stuff on it, it would break and you would investigate and seek compensation.

MDF is so widely used because it is so strong [ever tried breaking the stuff].

However, i would take the manager's phone call, explain the situation and ask for the options that you have - let him tell you. Have some already prepared if he doesn't come up with any, and suggest that he refunds the money and collects the item at their leisure; you need a table and that's all you require. It is unfortunate that the printing error resulted in a purchase, and it is his job to rectify that. I suspect he will just refund the cash and write off the table.
Then you can try it if you dare and see if it holds.

dmg24.......have a great time and don't be tempted to buy anything to bring back with you as you'll have no rights if it goes wrong. (It's too far away, you see.) ;):D

penrhyn........I wonder if they have just started putting out new labels now? There was nothing at all when we bought.

Zazen999.....What you say is true, if I hadn't browsed - I wouldn't have known but I do know now and unfortunately (and I do think it IS unfortunate if I'm honest) I am one of those people who are maybe too sensible for their own good and I'm not good with 'just seeing what would happen' especially since the figures I know tell me I'm not supposed to go higher than them.

However, I do agree with what you say about the manufacturers building in a safety factor. I know a test/review magazine tested the Ikea 'Oppli' tv bench and although Ikea said it could hold 70kg, it actually happily took 100kg in the test.

That bench was well supported in the middle though, mine has no middle supports at all which will obviously make a big difference.

I'm getting really fed up with Ikea now, I was in all day until 4pm but my OH came home from work early and so he was in when I had to go out so there was someone here all the time. Still no phone call. I'm more fed up with the poor customer service than anything else now!.

Grrrrrrrrr! Just phoned Ikea (AGAIN!) who tell me there are no case notes under the complaint reference number I was given and no record of anything been said.

I've just had to go through it all again (29 minutes on the phone) and still only ended up with a promise that the manager would call me.

Seems there has been a lot of new starts there who haven't quite got the hang of the system yet.

Right now...I DON'T CARE WHAT THEIR FLAMING EXCUSE IS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is taking up too much of my time now. I think I might file this under....'made a mistake buying this, will put up with it but the mistakes made both in selling and customer service have put me off shopping there again'.

Bizarrely enough, I am more confident buying from abroad. I bought some Camper shoes when in Paris, and they fell apart on me. Sent them back to Camper, and they refunded the cost of the shoes and postage, no questions asked! x

Have you considered shopping in John Lewis?

There's not one of them anywhere near me either.

If I could afford to furnish my house with good quality furniture, I would.

I'm well aware of the difference in quality depending where you shop and we do the best we can to furnish our large family home, so please lay off.

    Zebidee,

I think dangeroussports was being ironic, have a look at my post about JL - absolute nightmare - definitely do not shop in John Lewis! x
