Ikea problem - what do you suggest?

2. find an obliging adult who weighs about the same as your kit (if it is really this heavy) to sit on your TV stand for a few minutes. If it creaks alarmingly, they can jump off quickly and you will know it can't bear the weight. If it seems fine then you are good to go!
Lol, if only it were that simple.
It's perfectly possible for something to hold for some time (ie days/weeks)before growing weak and snapping. So I fear a small, few minutes test such as this just wont cut it I'm afraid.0 -
the wii and sky box etc probably are not huge weights so I agree with the idea of weighin gitems or look up the weight of your tv and appliances
if they all add up to less than 30kg then you will be fine surelyBaby Milk Action is a non-profit organisation which aims to save lives and to end the avoidable suffering caused by inappropriate infant feeding.0 -
I hope this doesn't sound cheeky or ungrateful as it's not meant that way and I'm glad of everyone's replies but my question wasn't actually about the weight of our stuff. We already KNOW the total weight is a problem. I don't need to weigh/test or do anything else to confirm this. I'm sure we all have different equipment....ours is what ours is and we bought the bench that we did as it would support it all (as we thought).
I only wanted advice on how best to resolve the situation with Ikea as they sold us something which now turns out to be not as strong as stated. Thanks anyway.0 -
When I had an issue with some drawers I bought from Ikea I called them and they arranged to post me the missing parts - they also offered to collect the duplicate bits too but made it clear that they'd rather I just binned it for them; this was fine for me!
I can't see them not refunding you, they're usually quite keen on the after sales - nothing big, but not letting a simple issue become a big one. They'll probably just refund it in your cirumstance, especially as it's their fault.
Doesn't solve your 'something to put the TV on' issue though!0 -
Possible scenarios......
I could reinforce it in some way which would involve cost.
I could take it back which would involve cost.
I could keep it as it is but will have to buy a different stand of some kind to handle all the tv equipment etc which will involve cost.
Any suggestions for a way round this situation? I'm fairly sure the manager will dig his heels in and tell me his hands are tied unless I take it back.
I'm not sure what to say to him when he phones. I just know I'm not very happy.
If you're not happy take it back for a refund.
I can't see why you are expecting compesation from them. The money, Dave...0 -
Id see what the manager were to say first, you never know they might offer a refund,No Links in Signature by site rules - MSE Forum Team 20

I tihnk since you've been missold a product then you should be fine.
However, the fact that you're refusing to test it out is a bit petty on your part! I've got an Ikea desk I've had for about 8 years which is only a 2cm thinck bit of MDF but holds a monitor, TV, VCR and PC without so much as a creak, so I think you'd be ok to test it out0 -

Eh?Did you actually read my post or just skim over it?
I'm not interested in compensation.
Fact: Item sold as able to handle 65 kg.
Fact: IKEA made an error and unit can't take stated equipment weight, it can't even hold HALF that.
Fact: Ikea cs wanted ME to bear the cost of fixing this error by returning item.
Fact: Returning the item would cost around £40 in fuel and a days travelling.
That is unacceptable, given the error is Ikea's.
I have tried to consider other options, hence this thread, but all options I have come up with involve me shelling out more money which I dont feel I should do.
I posted here in case anyone else came up with a solution that would be acceptable to both Ikea and myself.
Thanks for your reply.0 -
We bought a Ikea high chair when we were expecting ds. We didn't use it until he was almost 6 months old and it was only then we discover it had a fault, I called the CS line who said it was outside the normal returns period but would pass our comments on to the manager of the store we bought it from.
Next day we got a phone call from the store, and when we explained the problem the manger said we could either return the chair ourselves for a refund or replacement or they could arrange for it to be collected. We opted to return the highchair ourselves (it was out of the way but we didn't want to have to wait around for it to be picked up either) When we took it back not only did they give us our money back at full purchase price (the high chair had gone in the sale since we bought it) they also gave us a gift voucher for £10 and vouchers for a free meal in the cafe.
Anyway my point is....wait and see what the manager suggests.0
