I don't know about the different types of cards, but an alternative suggestion if you do have an offline card: stick the TSB card in your wallet for situations where you know you need an offline card.

I have a First Direct debit card in the back of my wallet for such situations, because I know that it'll work where online cards don't.

I do have several offline cards all for different purposes but this is the first contactless debit card i have so it would be better for it to be my main account.
I hate having multiple cards in my wallet i tend to have one credit card and one debit card and leave the rest at home. nevermind i just wondered if anyone knew whether TSB do online contactless cards like barclays. I'll just use it for savings i suppose. thanks for the quick reply :)

Called up to apply for gross interest and was told I have to go to the branch to do that (which is wrong anyway). The person I spoke to sounded clueless so I might call again and hope I get someone better informed.

TSB pay the highest amount of interest, so that's why I'm leaving it as a savings account. Otherwise, your balance would either spend a lot of time below £2000 or you'd have to compensate with a balance over £2000 and therefore have money not earning interest. I like spending the money that is earning me the least, which is why Santander 123 is my "main" account - I don't have anything that pays less, and that leaves my other money earning more.

Just tried again and was told they can't do it over the phone, I have to send the form to the inland revenue. Idiots.

The form doesn't go to HMRC, it should be sent directly to the Bank.

I know that, that's why I called them idiots.

Called for a third time and registered both accounts for gross interest over the phone. It's easy when you talk to someone who knows what they're talking about!

Nationwide is my main bank but its not contactless debit card i have a santander account but not the 123 account i have a large interest free OD so currently stooging that and earning decent interest with it at nationwide. I do like to shake things up though as i think using different banks is a good idea. I closed my unused co op account when doing the switch to TSB.
I have quite afew accounts not as many as some but i like to keep one unused in case a new switching offer appears.

edit that was a reply to herbalous forget to include quotes

well! its not the case with me! i listened to you and opened my second account with another username and now ive got 2 separate accounts with two usernames! Can i somehow merge them together??

this happened to me too, entirely my fault..i couldn't merge them so
I went into the bank and got them to close the accounts I had opened under a different user id.. and then when the cards came through( because they were on their way) I took them into the bank to make sure everything was closed and got the bank to shred them..
then I went onto my internet banking and opened a CP myself from there..

If you keep £2000 in the account then each month you'll end up with £2008ish (less if you pay tax), which means the final £8ish won't earn any interest. So it's best to move that to another interest paying account.

    thanks for that
