How rude of that woman to hurl abuse at someone trying to help!

I'm 4 foot 11 and very grateful when anyone will help me reach things in a supermarket. I have had the experience of toppling head first into a freezer and having to be rescued by a knight in shining armour, who did a manful job of not sniggering until I was out of sight.

The other problem I have is clothes shopping. Why do so many shops put their "petite" range on the top rails, WAY above the height of a normal "petite" user!

I am 4'10 and know exactly what you mean. Once, when shopping in Sainsburys at London Colney, OH actually asked an SA why the petite clothing was placed in such a way that petite women could not reach it. The reply was, 'it is in the store plan'!

Before they revamped Tesco in Watford, I had a problem reaching the ice-cream. I used to look around and as soon as someone came along, ask them to get what I wanted.

I was in Morrisons when they had the tuna on offer, which were on the bottom shelf, right at the back. I had to kneel down to get some. When a member of staff saw what I was doing, he offered to help me. He got down and moved tins forward and got me some.

I had that in a clothes shop. The petite clothes were all on those really high rails. I couldn't grab the hanger even when I jumped! My 5 foot 6 friend could only just get them by standing on tiptoes.

I once had to have first aid in WHSmiths because I couldn't reach a magazine on the top shelf (no, it wasn't that sort of magazine!) I just managed to get the corner with my fingertips and it fell down and sliced straight through my lip. I looked like I'd been mugged!

I'm 5 feet nothing & have the same problems. I was in Claire's once, no staff around other than a couple serving a queue of people & what I wanted was way too high. I spotted an elephants foot and stood on it, only for an assistant to magically appear to tell me off for using it, H&S reasons. I know all that, so either make everything reachable, have staff available on the shop floor or don't leave the elephants foot on show.

I'm also always grateful to tall people for getting items for me, although I've been known to stand on the bottom shelf to reach for something, a bit iffy I know as the shelf could collapse, but it's just to infuriating!

Third - I shop with a child. They're getting a *bit* big for it, but we identify the item & I then heft them upwards, they snag the article & we perform a controlled drop.

I'm picturing this poor child to be 33.

As a tall person I always make sure if I take something from the top shelf I pull the next ones to the front so smaller people can reach them. :)

I used to work in Farmfoods (many moons ago) and when restocking or stock taking I fell into the freezers on more than one occasion, I'm 5 2 and a half.

My problem now is a bad back and when I do the main shop I need one of the deep trolleys. This means that in order to unpack at the checkout I need to keep the trolley at the end so I'm not leaning in across the lenth of the trolley. This usually leads to comments from shoppers waiting behind me and checkout staff, what fun!

Yes, I am 5 ft (well actually 4 ft 11 1/2) and I too get very frustrated about the way shelves are stocked, especially those above the freezers.

Another problem I encounter is when trying to put my luggage in the overhead locker on a plane. Apart from my height I am hampered by rheumatoid arthritis in my left wrist. However I nearly always find a nice guy to heave it up and then they always offer to fetch it down again once I reach my destination!
