How many telephone sockets are inside the home in total?
Two, the master one and one upstairs. Yes, the one upstairs has one of those "things" stuck in it. (can't remember the name)

What method are you using to measure the broadband connection speed?
    The BT Wholesale one

Also, is your master socket of NTE5 design with a removeable faceplate?
No it's an Openreach one! I can take the front off though.

Have you tested from the test socket, by removing the face plate if so?
    Yes I have.

You need to see if you can check the broadband connection speed from the router as well by logging into it and trying to pull up some stats.

Measuring the speeds via a website is generally much less accurate.

Your speed test needs to be run on a wired connection to a PC or laptop using a Cat5 cable, NOT WiFi (which brings additional issues).

You'd need to ensure the following was done as well to get it as accurate as possible

PC is in safe mode with networking - reduces the chance of programmes or Windows using some of the bandwidth in the backround.

Ensure the PC is free from any malware, spyware or virus' that might be using some of the bandwidth in the backround

Ensure any other devices that connect to the router via wifi or ethernet are turned off or disconnected in case they are doing anything in the backround that might use some of the bandwidth.

Once all that's done then you get much more accurate data on throughput speed tests. It's worth checking speedtest.net as well as BT's own tester to cross reference the info in case the site is suffering from congestion which can also affect results.
