    Well done newlywed :j and...
... efrieze :j We all reach a stage where the weight loss slows down and sometimes stops altogether, it's known as a 'plateau' and a bit of help can be found here . There are variuos things that can be done but I found that I needed to reassess my calorie intake (downwards unfortunately) but when I did the weight loss picked up and I'm sure it will for you too. To lose 66 lbs already is a fantastic achievement :T and I hope you lose more than 1lb next week so that another target is met  ...

I think its a wonderful, responsible way of getting around the bigger issue of making ourselves better people for us and those we love. I only wish I as better with words so that this ddn't come across as patronising.

...An excellent post from you too ajax and it wasn't patronising at all :T ...

...starlight Thank you so much for your story, I can now remember that you mentioned the photos the other week, it's a brilliant idea, I wanted to do a similar thing but just couldn't face looking at them and now I regret not having taken them They would be a constant reminder and incentive to help me maintain. The mini targets are another good idea that have proved to help a lot of folk here, including me. Please put a link to your other forum (did you say previously that you are a moderator there?) Lainie did a link to hers. It was an inspiring post :T ...

Right - I have been reading about plateau'ing and I think that the problem is that I don't eat enough. I think I eat about 1000 calories a day (although I don't actually count calories) so maybe I should increase it a bit. I also eat the same thing most days which some people say is very bad as your need variety. But do you need variety to keep you from getting bored on a diet or do you need variety cos your body digests it better? I usually eat bran flakes + skimmed milk for breakfast, salmon (fresh or smoked) salad for lunch and then either salmon salad again for dinner:rolleyes: or chicken and veg or the equivalent. I don't generally eat carbs after breakfast if I can avoid it apart from the odd Sushi - no potatoes, rice, bread, pasta at all if I can help it cos I am a carb monster and I can't just eat a small amount. I know in the long run, I have to be able to eat these things in small quantities but that is phase 2 when it come to maintenance when i get to goal weight.

Anyone have any comments or advice???

........I'd agree about not eating enough, in my opinion (and I know very little, Suggs seems like the researcher) most people don't eat enough on diets. If the body gets used to taking in very little, it will store what it needs more readily, and that's stored as fat. If it gets used to a healthy intake, you'll naturally burn it off more by feeling better and moving that little bit sprightlier. Just has to be the right sort of calories.

Same with variety - you really need to experiment with food for both body and mind purposes. Stale mind = stale body.

Hi Efrieze I've also read that its not a good idea to eat the same amount of calories per day as your body gets used to it. For example if your calorie quota is 1400 per day, eat less one day and more another as long as it totals what you are allowed over the week. Hope that makes sense (I have a tendency to waffle). By varying the amount of calories you have per day, it tricks your metabolism.

I know that eating too little can be as bad as eating too much when youre trying to lose weight. A lot of us probably also fall into the trap of eating the same things. Im terrible for that and again its not good for you either. There is actually a calorie counting diet which works on the basis of changing your calorie intake by up to 30%. http://www.johnsonupdaydowndaydiet.com/page/1ee88/How_to_do_the_diet.html

(Sorry I dont know how to tidy up links when I post them)

So that seems to back up the theory that the same amount every day maybe isnt a good idea. I know of several people doing this diet and they seem to be quite successful on it :)

efrieze I think that if you are indeed eating only 1000 cals then this is far too low, but I would advise you to keep a food diary, if only for a week, to see exactly what you are eating; it is so easy to think that we are eating less than what we actually are. However if it is the case that you are eating too little then here is a good guide to daily calorie requirements (make sure you scroll down the page, there are some helpful explanations)

    Hope it helps :D

I don't know where to start when it comes to calorie counting as I have never counted calories. I model my diet on the old fashioned weightwatchers (whcih I started when I was 12, btw!!!) which says that you can eat unlimited vegetables (not the carby ones). So I make homemade soups with no oil, no sugar and no potatoes etc - just pure veg - and I have no idea how to count the calories in them. I guess I need to sit down and work out how many calories there are in a box of passata and a butternut squash etc to be able to fill in a food diary.
