Where is that Metro single person renting for £228/month?? Wish my rent was only that!
SFD today, had to pay for B&B but that was budgeted when I booked it. Walked past all the shops to get to my meeting and back and didn't go in a single one, before these challenges I'd have thought nothing of spending £3 in Starbucks in the same situation!New graduate trying to get debt-free.

I owe £5400 (plus £34,000 Student Finance)

Hello fellow torties.
Spend day today, however I have bought a fair bit of shopping and it should last a week.
Morries is still getting our custom as tescimos is just extortionately priced (although, I am getting daily emails about all the reductions they have made).
:undecided
So... spend was £20.93 but I had a spare £1 in my purse so only £20 removed from the shopping budget. So not too bad I think. (£10 of it was for OH's carling as it is on special offer).
I'm afraid I am not at all crafty. I am imaginative enough, it's the execution that I can't do as I am too clumsy and heavy handed. Would love to be able to do scrap booking and stuff like that.
Hope everyone else is doing okay. Keep plodding on torties.

Dd has had a better day - thanks Mrs GSR. She is still struggling to cope with everything at school, but the evening has gone much better. I'm currently sitting with her to help her get to sleep. Not ideal with a 6 year old, but then neither is leaving her to fret over stuff! She has instructions not to face me or talk to me, but to think happy thoughts. And I get to potter on mse for a bit, so I don't mind.
Nabbed another NSD :j. And tomorrow I hope to nab another (famous last words...) amd I have another bagful for the Sally Army. The decluttering continues...
Dh is out doing PA stuff at church, so I turned off the heating almost as soon as he shut the front door!
Have just realised that on Sunday, dd has her show rehearsals 9-3.30, a 55 min drive west, and a paarty 3-5 a 15 min drive east of home! I need some sparkly red shoes so I can just click the heels 3 times and think of home! I also need to do a double packed lunch and costumes! I'm tired just contemplating it!NST March lion #8; NSD ; MFW9/3/23 Whoop Whoop!!!0 -
Found a very interesting article in the Metro paper today which said the average monthly spends for things from single people and people in a relationship. It was intended to show people in relationships spend more and less on some things, but I was just astonished by the totals!!
Groceries: Single £107 In a relationship £132
Drinks with family and friends: Single £48.08 In a relationship £38.44
Meals out: Single £38.37 In a relationship £40.78

Days out: Single £32.62 In a relationship £26.91
Dating: Single £27.33 In a relationship £14.11
Clothes and accessories: Single £51.44 In a relationship £45.72
Beauty and grooming: Single £ In a relationship £
Rent: Single £228.21 In a relationship £285.22
Utility bills: Single £95.44 In a relationship £129.84

Transport: Single £70.82 In a relationship £84.25

total: Single £1045 In a relationship £1280
Wow I don't know how people afford that! and why are people in relationships spending money on dating? I'm assuming that is dating their OH and not someone else :rotfl:
This challenge has obviously had an impact on me, as I have just realised that I probably did used to spend at least that amount each month!
So today has been SFD number 3. It helped that I was at work from 7.30am until 5.45pm and then tutoring from 6-7pm. Unfortunately, no exercise today but aiming to run with one of the dogs again tomorrow after work.
I'm am feeling a bit grumpy so I am grateful for:
- having tutoring work to pay extra off my debt
- having less than £500 on my ccard
- having a lovely OH that seems to be getting lovelier by the day
- having lovely pets that are always happy to see me
- having lovely family, friends and colleagues
- having a job that I enjoy

sfd again today
thought some of you may be interested in this as i know we have a few teachers-
http://www.birmingham.gov.uk/stoploansharks
They have teaching resources for schools on there-
For primary schools: lessons about keeping your money safe, where does money come from and the difference between need and want. It also introduces the idea of saving and looks at issues around borrowing and lending possessions and money.
For secondary schools: lessons about safer lending and borrowing that reflect key financial inclusion objectives around when and how to borrow, values around money, saving and what can go wrong if you don’t make the right choice. There are lessons on credit, shopping around to get the best credit deal and the dangers of borrowing from Loan Sharks.
apparently financial education is going to be on the curriculum from key stage 4 (14-16 year olds) from september this year
edit- also what people were saying the other day about learning to cook- looks like trussel trust are offering help in this area too- http://www.trusselltrust.org/foodbank-projects at the bottom of the page
there is a local organisation that has a house in a nearby town that teaches disadvantaged people life skills like cooking but cant remember what its called to look it up further:j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j:j0 -

You and me both! :rotfl:
Good things for today: SFD number 2! I was severely tempted after my slightly frustrating day to have a coffee at the gym, but I didn't.
Another good thing is I managed to get into the thai pads class (think thai kickboxing crossed with circuit training:eek:
) even though the chap on the desk when I booked it on Tuesday wasn't really on the ball, as he'd booked me into the wrong week! Then the class was full, and I had to wait, crossing my fingers, that someone wouldn't turn up!
Less good things were a two-hour "review" with HR, supposedly to discuss my next steps and options, which was really her saying "you only have one option". Also my gym band initially not working, PMT descending and the hot water going all peculiar. Not very helpful today!
Thank goodness for kickboxing and chocolate. And whisky perhaps...“Obstacles are those frightful things you see when you take your eyes off your goals.”

Evening All,
Spend day for me today, veg and fish for the week, mainly for DD as I can eat out the freezer for the week. Had to buy an ink cartridge for the printer as it ran out last night, so didn't manage to get avon gumpf printed out, as well as other stuff but did it today while dd was asleep so will drop them round tomorrow. Should be a few SFD's coming up as I'm working tomorrow and Saturday.
Totals stand at:
3/15 SFD's
£20.06/£100 groceries incl cat food
3/18 LTW
0/£40 petrol
0/30 donations/declutter
Hugs to all that need them, have a lovely evening everyone xxDebt as at Feb 14: £2272.40DFW Nerd no. 1024June Overhaul #260 -
Hey Lotti, no that doesn't include my train tickets, my mum paid for them as my birthday present! That £100 is for 2 days catching up with friends eg oyster fares, lunches/dinner and probably a coffee and a sandwich each way! I'm sure I won't spend all that in 2 days but I'd rather over guesstimate...
NSD today, didn't leave the house. Had a delivery from Vegan Foods so put that away, plus my Avon delivery came so bagged that up too.

Hi everyone! Just finished day 3 of the 30 day shred. How are my other shred buddies doing?
I must confess, a spendy day. I only use rice bran oil to cook with and Asda don't do it, so I went to Tesc0 after work. They had it for £1.50 a litre instead of £2.00 so I bought two and a pack of bakewell tartsHowever, tomorrow should be safe, as I have nothing I need.
I also need to try to budget to renew passports too. My daughters runs out in July and mine and one of my sons toward the end of the year. They never lapse as they are always in use. The thought of an expired passport in the house, makes me feel quite ill, lol. However, it's not a necessity, so will renew when I can. Oh and I also had to renew my monthly travel card £120.00 to be squashed with everyone else and armpits in my face of a morning. What value for money that is,lol.
Applemuncher, I hope your daughter feels better soon
Take care everyone and keep going:A Your Always in my heart, you never ever will be forgotten-9/9/14:heart2:0 -
Spend free day. Will need to up date figures later as all my paperwork is in a box on the landing. Finished the ceiling, short break while I wait for the stain stop to dry and then I am going back to tackle the walls -skim over the ones that have marks on them. Not sure where I am sleeping tonight - in the just painted room, squeeze into the little bedroom or drape myself over the couch. Suspect bed is a long way off yet.
I get the British Heart Foundation newsletter online and today's issue has an article by Victoria Taylor (bhf dietician) about eating heathily on a budget. She was challenged by the editor to make a weeks healthy meals for £50 (Uk average spend aparently) http://www.bhf.org.uk/heart-matters-online/march-april-2014/nutrition/eat-well-on-a-budget.aspx Lots of interesting points made especially how food is elastic (economic term) whereas housing and utility costs are fixed, also links between heart disease/obesity being highest in economically deprived areas and travel costs/ access to food .
Remember a documentary on a Sheffield estate a few years back where food prices were the highest in the country (no-one on the estate could afford the bus fare to go into town so anyone too old /ill to walk was forced to pay the local shop prices.
Anyway the walls aren't going to paint themselves, so have a good night everyone. My mission in life is not only to survive, but to thrive and to do so with some Passion, some Compassion, some Humour and some Style.NST SEP No 1 No Debt No mortgage0
