  • We don't have close neighbours, but I do have dogs that bark. Its part of their job.

They bark at the post man, the lorry that comes every morning at the same time and various other things.

They do NOT bark at my clients who attend the property regularly . Because they accept them as ' normally allowed and friends'. I guess my suggestion would be chum up with your neighbours and the dogs, see if that helps.
neighbours are nice people - frequently holding post for me - hence me not wanting to be a backstabber and involve councils or anything stupid like that

  • If your neighbors are friendly and approachable, then why not in a polite, calm manor approach them with the issues its not like their going to turn into the neighbor from hell becase you've asked reasonably that they ask their dogs to stop barking for so long.

dogs bark its in their DNA theres no stopping a dog barking but theres intervention by the owner for the amount time they bark for so why not ask them about it.

arguing the term troll on here wont solve your issues at hand.

well, that may be so - but I challenge anyone on here to put up with the levels of incessant barking I have to, day in, and day out. Only time it stops is when I'm at work. It is enough to drive anyone mad, so I guess drama queen accompanies general loss of rationale, which is what you get when you live next to a field of yappy little dogs going at it until the cows come home!

I personally think the laws on this are inadequate, and plenty of dog owners simply do not care about noise pollution. I also think the USA is streets ahead of the UK in terms of its approach to noise pollution. I think the reason why we don't do anything about it, is that it's not so much in your face offensive, but a gradual and constant grind on the senses. Shouldn't have to put up with it.

Ive put up with anti social neighbours for the best part of 18 years, I know what its like not to live in peace and quiet. Fights at all hours of the day and night, items being smashed on the landing, flats that are used as party flats when the tenant isnt there and other people have had keys cut. I know exactly what its like to have your peace and quiet disturbed, but these are dogs, they bark, its not their fault.
Unlike humans who know exactly what they are doing to upset other people.

Id put up with a couple of yappy dogs any day of the week

How on earth do you propose to stop a dog from barking?

Are they going to be impressed with you using gadgets like the ultrasonic gizmo then?

If you're on good terms, go and speak to them. A neighbour popped around to tell me my dog was barking during the day when we first moved in - unknown to us, she'd developed separation anxiety, so we were grateful for the heads up. It actually led to her being diagnosed with her hypothyroidism, so I'm grateful in a way!

Dogs bark, but if it's excessive than it can be a nuisance. As a dog owner, I'd be happy to work with a neighbour to resolve an issue like this. We had it with the neighbour on our other side, they got a new dog which started running up and down our adjoining fence and caused by two to bark at it. For the sake of everyone's ears, I spent time teaching mine to ignore the dog, and the neighbours did us a favour by replacing our side of the fencing at the same time as doing their side for just the cost of the materials (neighbour is a builder). The more solid fence meant their dog lost interest (he could previously sneak glances at ours through the slats), and with the training mine soon weren't bothered by the sound of their dogs on the other side anyway. Win win for everyone!

Can't you just be normal and have a word with your neighbours about it without coming off rude. I mean you have cats so you obvs an animal lover so calling dogs disgusting horrible things isn't nice. Dogs bark mine loves to bark but if she barks outside she gets told off. Loads of dogs bark by mine all day and night its annoying but so what. So are the rough neighbours having loud parties to 3am and screaming so loud in the morning to someone who is probably about a metre away from them and you think they on the other side of town how loud they talking. Or my next door neighbour playing the recorder every day and night and the same song for the past year that I want to go next door and snap the recorder in half. But I don't because am a reasonable person and they have to put up with my mothers singing haha.

Am sure if you just go around to your neighbour and explain that the barking is annoying you and upsetting your cats then they will try to resolve it. If they are nasty about it then get the council involved. Cats are annoying as well. I have a cat and dog and i've seen my cat poo in other people's plants even though she has a fresh litter tray. Next door have a bird feed and she always stalking around it and she loves to sit on the fence of the neighbours garden and tease the dog.

So when you were "house hunting" the dogs didnt bark then? Seems you didnt heed the advice when looking to buy. "Check it out at many differnt times of the day". Silly when spending vast amounts of cash if you didnt. Surely you would have heard the YAPPY dogs had you done this.

Also i would hope your kitties are litter trained, I would hate your neighbours to complain about cat poo in their garden.

Also how do you know they are nasty? Has one biten you? My advice to you is sell up buy a field and self build. That way no one will annoy you.

Give me a yard full of yappy dogs anyday rather than some humans

my elderly neighbour never had pets until she began to 'dogsit' her sons Westie. that was joined by another Westie. Yes they bark, yes they yap outside. and she is deaf so her TV is blaring. of the two I prefer the dogs yapping and barking to the TV. No, I don't even think of complaining. It doesn't bother me. now if they were barking all night..........that would be different. I would have to 'have a word with her'.
oh and although they do 'bark and yap' and are 'little dogs', I wouldn't call them disgusting. They give an elderly sick neighbour a purpose in life. she feels 'useful' to provide doggy day care.
  • As the owner of 6 "disgusting yappy dogs" I will say this:

Please don't think calling any dog disgusting on a pet forum won't upset people.
Just because a dog barks does not make it disgusting. It's what they're programmed to do.
When I moved house last year, I told my neighbours to let me know if my dogs barking was a problem. I told them I can only do something about it if I know it's a problem.
I am mindful of my neighbours and do not let my dogs bark excessively. I do not stop them completely, but a few barks, and that's it.
Please do not use any sort of gadget or gizmo on your neighbours dogs without their permission. How would you feel if the situation were reversed and it was your cats?
  • I'm with those who have said why didn't you check this out sufficiently before you bought the house? We viewed our house 3 times before exchange, on the first visit we saw that one of our neighbours had a dog and it was our responsibility to determine whether it would be something that would put us off buying due to noise levels. As it is there is the occasional bark but, again as others have said, this is what they do. He's a perfectly lovely little animal and we got to know him quite well when our fence between the two gardens was down during the storms!
