Great idealistic view there. Lets not forget ultimately were all human and can make mistakes, can misjudge a situation or could just have lost a split second doing routine mirror checks whilst something untoward is happening ahead.
Bet you've never bumped in to anybody in the street either, or accidentally grabbed a bag by just one handle or dropped your phone or anything else
Unfortunately, people like sinbad blame all the problems in the world on people less fortunate than himself. I tried to make the point you were making and failed. Up until that accident, I'd never even got as much as a speeding fine/awareness course, in the six years since passing my test. I've driven hundreds of times in the ice and, well, that morning, I just made a mistake. Like I said, they happen and ultimately, I accepted that mistake and was quick to admit my guilt. I guess some people are holier than thou.

Abs does work on ice - I know from driving my last mondeo it certainly does. It works by releasing and reapplying brakes to a point where your wheels arent skidding and to allow you to come to a stop without loosing control of the car. It's very scary on ice as you can feel it kicking in, but in reality you'd be keeping your foot on your brake to avoid hitting a car and the result is the wheels loose all traction instead of most and just slide and probably spin the car.

A dodgy abs isn't the end of the world and tbh probably wouldn't have stopped you in time anyway. Remember not all cars have abs.
You miscalculated the stopping distance. It happens. Problem is you was most probably the victim of fraud but insurance companies don't try to disprove most cases because its cheaper to pay people off.

Maybe not, I was merely pointing out that I made a mistake, we all do it.

Ultimately arcon, the fact they put in a medical claim actually doesn't affect me at all... well no more than it hurts peoples insurance premiums in general. Insurance premiums are calculated on fault claims, not medical claims. It was the principal of the matter. The fact one of the guys took several weeks off work with a serious knee injury yet was out every day working under his car, on ladders painting his house etc. He was having a right laugh at our expense. Just a shame insurance companies are so happy to pay out now, instead of trying to prove the money is warranted.

There's some work here that suggests otherwise

I didn't know modern policing existed. I thought they were too busy nicking people for doing 36 in a 30?

They were all far too busy when I witnessed an actual crime...
About 500 people are murdered in the UK a year. 1700 were killed on the roads in 2012. I know what I'd like the police to focus on.

In relation to the OP, there are circumstances when personal injury claims are unavoidable, but having a culture in which they're frowned upon a bit can't be such a bad thing?

I was knocked off my bike a couple of years ago, slight injury and damage to my bike. Instead of providing insurance details the driver wanted an argument, and seemed to think he had right of way because he was indicating. When I did get through to his insurers they weren't forthcoming, so I resorted to personal injury lawyers. I got a small 4 figure sum...eventually.

If he'd been reasonable about it I would have just accepted £50 or so to repair my bike, but he and his insurance company brought it on themselves.

Id hazard Stoke's car is older than 9 years old.

And yes, a 9 year old Lupo that does 25k a year and has faulty brake systems is a banger.

And yes, judging by the piles of junk some people on here keep on the road I probably would have a heart attack.

Plase someone post some pics for the love of god!

fair enough. I thought the point of anti lock breaking was to prevent your wheels from locking up, which it should in snow. I certainly notice it kicking in a lot more in snow.

Like I said in my original post, I admitted liability from the off. I accepted it was my mistake, that was never in doubt. My issue is with the two individuals trying to claim large amounts of money and blag time off work when there was nothing wrong with them.

I also took umbrage at the tool sinbads assumption filled excuse of a post.

Most ABS systems will still kick in on snow, because there is still some resistance. It's on sheet ice that there is virtually no resistance at all. So if all 4 wheels lock, and the system can't detect any force trying to turn the wheels, then it assumes that you are parked. If the system was too sensitive then ABS would try to cut in if you were stationary on a hill, holding the car on the foot brake, and it would try to continually brake and release.

I know what you mean about people making false claims. They just think it is a way to make a quick buck.
