I dont see a problem with black as long as you dont look like youre going to a funeral, i.e a bit of colour in somewhere! Ive worn a black dress with coloured flowers over it and black tights before.
I just think leggings would look like you hadnt bothered. I guess if the bride and groom were in their joggers you might get away with it :rotfl:
Tbh, I dont think theres much difference between wearing leggings with a dress over it and black opaques. It might actually be an easier option for someone who is heavier. I was over two stones heavier than I am right now last year and tights were a nightmare for me, because even some shop ones that are XL or XXL are cut very small.
In a case like that I dont see the harm in wearing leggings rather than opaques. Some weddings arent that formal. Some are.
Dare I say it, even when some people are very dressed up, they dont always look smart.0 -
I have this top (managed to track one down on ebay!) which IMO is perfect for anything. Looks great with jeans (not for the wedding!) and with dressy trousers or skirts. I like things like that which are adaptable.

Got a perfect long pink/purple top too which ties at the back, has a little pinky/purpley cami underneath, is sheer, batwing long sleeves, patterned - it's again perfect for anything.
I get compliments on both when I wear them. Wish I could find a pic of the other one, have googled for ages!
Anyway, I would describe dressy as something that doesn't look like you'd wear it to work. Something maybe sheer, patterned, with a sparkly bit on maybe, generally 'dressy', batwing sleeve ideal, also search 'kimono top' for a nice flattering shape.

I'm not much of a trousers person, especially at weddings and suchlike, but if that's what you're comfy in then wear them and dress up with a nice top and accessories.
Have a look at maxi dresses though; they can look dressier than trousers, you can wear them with flats and they're really comfortable. This one is pretty.
Overcome the notion that you must be ordinary. It robs you of the chance to be extraordinary!Goal Weight 140lb Starting Weight: 160lb Current Weight 145lb0 -
Don't overthink this. Wear whatever is 'you', what you are comfortable in, is smart and looks like you have made an effort. It's better if it's not completely black or completely white in case the bride/groom would prefer you don't, but some are fine with it. However this couple like you as you are and want you at their wedding so don't worry so much.Don't listen to me, I'm no expert!0

Except that they stop at the ankle so it's clear you're wearing leggings. And some people don't seem to realise they are designed for wearing under things not to be worn on their own so we can all see your butt hanging out and in the worst case not even opaque and therefore underwear on show too!
I just can't imagine considering wearing them to a formal event. So I guess it wouldn't look so bad if the wedding was very informal and you had a dress on but I wouldn't wear them personally.0 -
Well you could go trouser suit but might just be another face in the crowd with presumably a lot of LGBT people - or you could go long dress/skirt. Leggings depends on whether they look like stuff for the gym - silk ones could look great for example0

well at the last civil partnership I attended, I wore a gents suit complete with waistcoat, smart shoes and a proper shirt and tie - it's the most comfortable I've ever felt in my life when having to dress up.
At the end of the day as everyone else has said, wear what you feel comfortable in. Also because it's a civil partnership, remember, there are actually no rules when it comes to these things (apart from the no mention of religion in any way shape or form).
Most of all, enjoy the day :-)0 -
If you're edging towards a dress, have you considered full length (down to your ankles)?
There are plenty about, and even at 5'9'' you should have no problem - no one will even see your shoes, so wear what's most comfy (within reason - ballet pumps, flat sandals etc)
debenhams have lots, but most other stores will too

My bottom wouldnt be hanging out of leggings that had a dress over it though.
The difference between wearing leggings and wearing black opaque tights isnt very much I think
I dont look a lot different in a dress with a pair of opaques and shoes on than in the same dress with a pair of black leggings underneath and shoes
As I said before, when I was heavier, tights would have been a massive problem for me, I wasnt comfortable in them at all.
I understand that some people wouldnt ever wear leggings to a wedding ever, thats fine, but I dont think they look that bad if they are just a pair of plain black leggings with a smock or a dress on top.0 -
They don't look bad, but I suspect the vast majority of people would consider leggings to be too casual for most weddings.
Like trainers, or hoodies, or crop tops, or christmas jumpers, fine in the right situation but not in every situation!0
