So 10 hours on the train and I bet you were on facebook or twitter at some point during your journey that the thought of calling a hotel at your destination didnt seem that important

PS, Having vented, I would now like to praise the railway staff for going above and beyond in trying to keep their passengers moving. In particular, the driver of the South Western train from Southampton to Weymouth. He worked for hours after his shift must have ended. He had the responsibility for the lives of all the people on board the train and drove with great care through atrocious conditions. On the three times that we came across a fallen tree on the line, it was the driver who leapt out of his cab with a chainsaw to chop up and remove the tree. Truly an unsung hero!
Now that does sound like a hitchcock movie, I commute daily over a number of train companies and never see the drivers getting out of their cab at the end of the journey carrying their chainsaw along with their bag and a thermos

Phone around alternative hotels to see if they have room for the OP. You don't need approval from higher management to be a decent human being.....
Why would the desk clerk have access to phone numbers of local (competitors) hotels.

    Why wouldn't they?

I don't think I've ever been in a hotel where they didn't have access to the local phone book/yellow pages. It's almost the most basic thing that every hotel has....

If they did have a room but you only had cash on you, these premier inn morons insist on ID if you dare to offer coins of the realm, legal tender, to pay. They would have happily thrown you out of the door if you didn't have ID.

How many members of staff do you think work in a Premier Inn over night? You work a nightshift in a packed hotel, not knowing who's going to come through the door, not knowing when the fire alarm is going to to off, and you think to yourself if you also want to take on the responsibility of random strangers you don't know from Adam lying around in the foyer.

It's alright talking of community spirit - you were wrapped in in your little duvet at the time.

Why should they trust someone without any ID?

It's a business decision, it's not the receptionist deciding. I am amazed you have such little insight into the way some simple things work.

Premier Inn are not a traditional hotel. They are a cheap bed for the night. Most will only have one member of staff on duty at night who have little authority to do anything beyond check in guests.

The OP traveled half the country in this weather, on a Friday night, didn't think of booking a hotel until 2 in the morning.

Would any normal, rational person do this int he weather we've been having, particularly a single female?

Why did she leave everything to chance? She's exactly the sort of person the emergency services waste their time dealing with.
