If the OP had booked a room and it wasn't available when she got there she has the right to moan but just expecting them to magic up a room is unreasonable. Where was she planning to stay the night if the train had arrived on time?
I don't work for PI but I stay a couple of nights most weeks I don't always get in the one I want due to other people beating me to making my booking not PI's fault.0 -
Although they did nothing wrong I would expect a hotel when there is exceptional bad conditions, eg flooding to at least have the decency to phone around some local hotels/b&bs to see if they had room for the OP. The hotel industry is very cliquey in towns and they all know each other.
It would have taken a matter if minutes to find an alternative place for the OP.
It's not so much premier inns failings but a lack of human decency in the person the OP dealt with. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
An as a further defence of Premier Inn I once arrived at a Premier Inn, having pre-booked the room, at about 10.30 pm.
The receptionist made the comment that she was about to ring me to check everything was OK as I hadn't arrived.
So it sounds OP if you had someone who at best couldn't think outside the box rather than having been specifically trained in how to offer poor customer service2014 Target;

Yes this happened to me once train cancelled and nowhere to go but hotel I went to found me another hotel a couple of miles away and phoned for a taxi for me and let me wait in their nice warm reception til it arrived.0 -
But if you are in that situation surely you can ask them to help you find somewhere else. I wouldnt be wandering around at 2am in the morning without knowing if anywhere else had a space or how to get there.
Its a two way thing surely.0 -

I get the impression from the original post that the hotel may have already phoned around for prior prospective customers but found no other accommodation available.
If they had, then little point in doing it again.0 -
On the other side of the coin, imagine you were a Premier Inn customer in your room. During the night you hear a lot of talking from the lobby, doors banging all night etc. You discover the hotel has allowed travellers, the homeless, and any passer by to bunk down in their hallway. Would you be impressed?
Or maybe you're working there on reception, and you have 100 people coming in, one after the other, asking about rooms. Do you take the time to try and find them all something elsewhere in the town? By the 101st, you're absolutely knackered and just want a cup of coffee...0 -
"As for turning the waterworks on when you didn't get your own way....... Words fail me"
No - you mistake me. I did not ‘turn on the waterworks’ to get my own way. I was exhausted to the point that I had started to shake and the tears came as I was leaving, more as a stress release then anything else.
I am a resourceful mature woman who is normally on top of most situations. I just happened to be caught out in exceptional circumstances and would have appreciated a little human kindness, which was sadly lacking at the Premier Inn. Luckily I did find that kindness in a local B&B owner who admitted me at 3am (no ‘waterworks‘ involved). It is reassuring to know that there are still some people around who are capable of kindness towards others.
Chances are Premier Inn desk clerk would have been sacked for allowing someone to doss in the foyer.
The BandB owner was in a position to make the decision.0 -
as the last two posts have said, also if they do let you sleep in one of the foyer chairs and dont have the facilities to look after your belongings and someone else walks in during the night when the desk isnt 'as' manned as during the day
i believe they are just covering themselves and i believe some personal responsibility is needed too0
