Yesterday (Friday 14th February), I, like many other people suffered an arduous train journey due to yet another dreadful storm hitting the UK. My journey from Brighton should have seen me arrive in Dorchester at about 8.10pm Friday evening, but the train didn’t arrive there until 2.20am Saturday morning (after almost 10 full hours of journeying).

Why didnt you just get a taxi to wherever it was you were supposed to be going to after your scheduled arrival at 8.10pm in Dorchester?

I just happened to be caught out in exceptional circumstances and would have appreciated a little human kindness, which was sadly lacking at the Premier Inn

Did you want kindness or magic? I don't think you know the difference to be honest.

This is a complete over reaction. Can you actually explain what kindness you were expecting? To sleep on a chair? On the floor?

I did find that kindness in a local B&B owner who admitted me at 3am (no ‘waterworks‘ involved). It is reassuring to know that there are still some people around who are capable of kindness towards others.

What you mean the B&B had a room? That's not kindness, it's a spare room which Premier Inn didn't have.

Wow! Is the OP an author? That reads like Mills and Boon type stuff. How would you finish that sentence?

As I stood looking perplexed with tears welling up in my eyes....................

...............suddenly he grabs me, tipping me across his lap. With one smooth movement, he angles his body so my torso is resting on the bed beside him. He throws his right leg over both mine and plants his left forearm on the small of my back, holding me down so I cannot move … He places his hand on my naked behind, softly fondling me, stroking around and around with his flat palm. And then his hand is no longer there … and he hits me—hard.

It can't have been Mills and Boon, there was no mention of a twin set once.......

Wow I hope I never get stranded near wherever some of these posters live. What a rotten attitude people have now, if they can't help a lone female in exceptional circumstances. Sometimes people need help and assistance  I'm glad the OP found somewhere.

There is a long and well-documented history of hotels - and Inns - turning people away when they're full:rotfl:

I understand that FGS! But in exceptional circumstances such as awful weather people could and maybe should put themselves out and help someone in distress. Life isn't always so black and white.

Apparently you don't...my comment was in jest. Hence the use of the smily!

I will clarify - no room at the INN!:rotfl:

  • OP, did you positively ASK if you might sit in the lobby, use the facilities, etc. or just expect them to offer it? I'm unclear on that from my reading of your first post.

I was in a similar situation (lone female, very disrupted travel, middle of the night) once in Canada, though it was a 4* airport hotel. They invited me to nap in one of their small meeting rooms - not cluttering up the lobby and very kind of them in the circumstances.

If there's nowhere for them to offer you that avoids cluttering the lobby, I can see why they couldn't offer it - what if a guest complained? At the least, however, I'd expect them to allow you to use their phone if need be (ie. if you didn't have a mobile) and to check that, when you left, you were going somewhere safe. But my expectation is moral, nothing more. I know I couldn't live with myself if I didn't offer that kind of assistance and something happened. Reminds me a little of the bus fare stories: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/crime/9318551/Law-student-raped-after-being-turfed-off-bus-because-she-was-20p-short-of-the-fare.html

If I had been on my way to a town under the circumstances you describe, Id either have been trying to book a room while on the train or text a family member to get online and book me something. I wouldnt have left it until 2am in the morning hoping to get a room at a hotel or B and B.

They didnt put you in an unsafe situation, the hotel was full, there was little they could do for you.

And the messages of the last few days have been do not travel, it was clear that the weather was going to be horrendous, you put your safety first and you stay home.

Also, this is one hotel, it doesnt mean that the service you'd get in every premier in would be poor, just because they couldnt help you in a crisis situation. If there had been a room free you'd have been able to pay for it and book in.
