Names go round and round in circles ....I would have been horrified if I'd heard of any of my contemporaries calling their babies Alfie, Freddy, Maud, Poppy or Olivia way back in the late 1960s - but have been introduced to babies with these names since Christmas!

When our DD was born, we were told that the name we'd chosen was very old-fashioned - but then when she started school there were another four little girls with the same name in her class!

I have two or three friends (of my age) called Pamela, Valerie and Barbara .....but haven't heard of any babies with these names recently!

    Absolutely...back in the 80's I went out with Darren,Gareth and Andrew....never a freddie...he was Mr "Queen"!

My sister dated a Freddie in the late 80s, when they were both in their late teens.

As it's only a middle name I shouldn't give it a second thought. In my view middle names are pointless.

I have a middle name which I never use unless filling in an official form - I only use it then because I feel I have to.

My OH has no middle name and if we had had children we would not have given them middle names

Im in my 40s and I know a few Pamelas. Went to school with a Valerie and a Barbara

The most common girls names when I was at school were Michelle, Jane, Karen, Pamela, Sandra, Lynn, Yvonne, Isobel, Anne, Elaine, Marie, Tracy, Aileen, Sharon, Gillian, Joanne, Linda

Boys names, Graham, Matthew, John, James, Alex, Alan, Scott, Peter, Paul, Steven, William, Chris, Robert, Andrew, Patrick, Thomas

I do think some names will go in and back out of fashion, but certainly a lot more unusual names in fashion now that when I was growing up.

Contribute? Do you mean have a snipe?

Maybe the OP doesn't have anyone in her real life she feels she can share this with?

Maybe on the families forum she thought she might get a friendly ear!!!!!!!!

She asked a question and people provided their views. That is what happens on a forum. Just because someone didn't agree with her doesn't mean they're having a snipe. It is a forum where you get a whole range of responses and if you aren't ready to hear a range of responses then you shouldn't ask the question.

The OP then resorted to personal abuse.

I am not getting a sniff of blood, as you put it. If you look back on my posting history then you'll see that your comment is completely uncalled for.
  • I don't recall any Isaacs (I'm a child of the 70s) but I knew a few Isabel/Isobels.

Growing up we lived next door to two Isaacs. Father and son, and I think the Grandfather was also an Isaac too, this was in the 80's. The father got called Ike.

I was only going to be given one name when I was born, apparently my brother chose it as it was the same name as a girl in his class at school (he was 5 at the time). My grandmother on my mother's side got the hump because it's the same name as my father's grandmother, even though I wasn't named after her, so I ended up having my mother's grandmother's name tacked on as a first name (because it didn't "go" as a middle name). So I have the pain in the arris that is being known by my middle name, where anything official has my first name instead (which I'm not very keen on).

When DD arrived we gave her a first name and middle name that we liked, no discussion with anyone else. It was only when someone asked me if I'd named her what I did after my late mother that I realised that her name has my mother's name in the middle of it, it certainly wasn't intentional. And everyone liked her middle name, apart from one friend who told me it was a cow's name! :D

DS was named by DH, and has his name as a middle name. Again, I didn't realise for ages but the first two letters of his name are the same as my father's, and are used as a short form of both, but that was also unintentional.

I personally wouldn't have given either of my children a name belonging to someone on one side of the family or other, at the risk of offending the other, but I think this is something the OP just has to keep silent about.

And it looks like we made it once again
Yes it looks like we made it to the end

My sister and I's middle names are named after relatives on mum's side of the family.

My brother's first name is my uncle's (dad's side) middle name and my brother's middle name is my dad's first name. Mum wasn't aware that my brother's first name was my uncle's middle name. I remember her saying that her MIL was very pleased about this.

A cousin of mine is named after his father - but his first name is his middle name and his middle name is his first name.

I really don't think it matters tbh. After all, it's the parents decision and the child has to grow up with that name.
