  • Fire blade-IT WORKS. Anyone counting calories is destined to have a sad life. High fat, medium protein, low carb is the way to go. Low carb DOES provide carbs-just good ones (cauli/broccoli, etc).

I've lost over 4 stone low carbing. Now I'm at the weight I want I'm not anal about it....I will have some white carbs (ie some brad with a curry, pizza etc) but only occaisionally-I'm now more aware of carb content & what I eat etc. There are loads of TV programmes, tests etc that show how effective low carbing can be. Most people that slag it off don't understand the concept of it & that you CAN have carbs-just the right ones!

I didn't say it didn't work but most people don't understand why it works. You are falling foul to confirmation bias. Thinking that it was the carbs and not taking into account all variables.

Low carb works because by removing them you lower your overall calorie intake.

The science is pretty clear on that. It makes no difference as long as you lower your overall food intake which reduces calories. You don't have to ditch carbs or calorie count just eat less.

Type of carbs makes negligible difference.

Low carb was a myth that everyone jumped on without knowing why it works. It also has the other problem that it causes lack of energy and people generally feeling awful.

    Evening :)

i think i am experiencing what they call 'Keto Flu'. I feel awful :( Very nauseous, exhausted, aching legs, brain fog, complete lack of appetite..all the classic symptoms.

I know it's different for everyone, as not everyone experiences it. but for any of you who did experience it, how long did it last?
I had it once years ago it lasted a day, but I believe it can be a week.:grouphug:

Hi-never had Keto flu (crap name lol!)-just went to the loo a lot (!). Fireblade-we'll agree to disagree.....I certainly was NOT cutting calories anywhere near enough to lose weight....buttery swede mash, 'hybrid' pizza (google it-BRILL)-with stupid ammounts of toppings etc. Google some of the recipes on the Atkins UK board under the name of 'Chris'....thats the kind of luxurious food you can eat.

All views make a board interesting but I for one think that burning fat not carbs metabolises better (ie in my case I could eat more) than standard calorie cutting.

No trolling I was just explaining that there are alternate ways that work without having to resort to losing the carbs.

Thats fine and I'm happy it has worked for you.

The science however is a fact and has been studied to death. The reason why you lost weight was a reduction in calories/greater calorie expenditure.

Sorry to have caused any problems :(

I had a horrendous night, the nausea was just awful and i am feeling rubbish again today. I dont mind the other symptoms, but the nausea is the worst. So just staying at home today. I wa advised that drinking broth is good, as it adds salt back into the body, which will help with the keto flu.
Not sure if its true, but definitely going to try it!

I also have had zero appetite. I ate breakfast yesterday, then ate some raw veggies about 2pm because i felt like i should, but i havent eaten anything since. The nausea is making it impossible.

It's interesting that Fireblade automatically assumed i am Low Carbing to lose weight. Yes i am hoping that will be a nice side effect, but i actually discovered that it is a good diet for insulin related health issues, which i have.

Thanks for the helpful advice and support :)
  • Why do Low Carb?

You are not going to lose weight any faster.

It's about calories not macros. Body needs carbohydrates there's a reason you feel awful.

All studies to date have shown that there is no significant different to mow fat low carb when calories are equated.
The body does need carbohydrate, and it gets enough from fruits and veg without adding in extra in the form of bread etc

The reason why people get "low carb flu" is not down to not getting enough carbs. It's down to the re-working of the body's processes as it 'learns' to use fat as fuel instead of carbs. It's a more intensive process which can leave you feeling tired and run down.

    Calories mean absolutely nothing.
A diet in high fat and low carbs is fine and you will lose weight.

No, thats not how low carb diets work.

The human body today is used to eating carp.
Feed it bread and it will go through the system (without benefitting it in any decent way) without expanding many calories. Added to which, it spikes an insulin response.
The calorie intake of the bread is more than the calories used to process it.

Whereas a high fat diet will cause you to lose weight if carbs are low because the way fat is processed is calorie heavy.

A high fat diet will make you feel more satisfied, less hungry, and wont mess up your insulin release.
