Just an observation but it should be noted that the Ormus thread did not receive a post for over a month before it was unpinned.

I don't particularly have a preference as to which thread is made a sticky in The Arms but I think that Sheel's photo thread might get my vote (if there was one)
It is more universal than the Ormus thread even though that has more emotion attached to it.

There is no pleasing everyone with only one choice available but please don't let the decision be made in favour of who shouts the loudest, I did suggest in a thread in The Arms yesterday that a poll might be the fairest way to decide and I still stand by that, a poll between Sheel's photo thread and the Ormus thread.

I don't use The Arms but was there an issue in there with the number of stickies in the first place?
I cannot imagine that there were posts from people seeking advice in there or that if there were any that they suffered because of the number of stickies.

Why poll to decide what one you have, if the number there did not cause a problem why not poll to bring them all back, or to set a number that most people are happy with?

The BG's have been instructed to leave just one sticky on each board.

    Which makes th sticlkies irrelevant.

I get this is a whole money making thing now, but there is no reason they had to change something so fundimetnal BEFORE changing the forum design.

It seems to be the kind of commercial decison we were afraid of when the site was sold on.

There were three stickies, one was (is) The Money Saving Arms, a thread for chat.

The second was a thread posted by the Son of a much loved poster on here, Ormus. He'd gone awol for a few months and his Son, Craig, posted a thread to let his online friends know that he'd suffered a stroke. He comes back from time to time to update the thread, but sadly Ormus' condition has deteriorated over time. That doesn't stop us missing him and wondering how he's getting on. People will often post at random times just to say the Ormus Family are in their thoughts, and at Christmas and New Year
people pass on good wishes there.

The third sticky was a photo thread, where members of the forum could post photos of themselves, so people could put a face to the username.

IMO there was no issue with the number of stickies, the board's full of inane chat anyway so it's not like they were taking up space that more pressing threads could have been taking. Also, the Money Saving Arms is very rarely used, and I personally think the 'Ormus' thread was more deserving of being a sticky. It would be nice if a poll was posted, so all the people who use The Arms could have their say.

I'm assuming they were also instructed to give some thought to reducing the number of threads listed in the single index thread that remains. Well, that's happened anyway.

One example I don't understand is in the mobile phones board, where there was a fair sized thread about roaming.

Now that this is no longer pinned to the top or listed in the single index thread that is now, I foresee more people not noticing it.

That might mean people starting a greater number of independent threads to ask about roaming, which the board guide may or may not merge to the long one, and other members may or may not notice.

I can imagine this potential tendency towards inefficiency happening in many other boards.

So whatever the foreshadowed improvements will be, let's hope they go past this rather sideways or slightly backwards step.

Yes, I might subscribe to that thread to improve the chance of spotting replies, but I've never been subscribed to any except automatically by posting on it, and never received loads of emails about replies.

I don't want that stream of emails, and just a glance at the board is, oops I mean used to be, good enough to show whether there are new replies. Now instead that might from time to time be on page 2 or 3. Despite regular new questions, maybe it's not deemed as so important any more.

I agree; many posts were made stickies because they contained important information that was referred to frequently and, usually but not necessarily, updated fairly regularly.

Now, people are going to start innumerable new threads because the once-sticky thread has disappeared off P1, or even P2, no doubt leading to fractious responses like 'do a search before posting on that old subject'.

The old stickies were useful because they were
    1 Visible - they could be seen by all and be noticed by newbies;
2 Accessible - you always knew you could go to the latest post with a single click; and
3 Static - you always knew exactly were they were and, if a new one was added, you could see it.

The new 'tidy stickies' are none of those things. And, if a new one was added to a list, none of us would ever know.

It was also very easy to see if a sticky had a new post added to it. Now with just a link there is no way of knowing unless you have subscribed to it. The link also just takes you to the beginning of the thread and not the first new post.

I suspect it will get to the stage of new posters not being answered as people get fed up of answering the same questions again and again.
