  • I don't understand why some sellers still overcharge on p&p. It saves them no money at all and makes the buyer feel ripped off.

    I would reply with.

    'Dear Buyer

Sorry you were not happy with the delivery charge, which was clearly displayed at the time of your bid.

You are welcome to return the item for a full refund. However as the delivery charge in the listing was clearly stated - and you agreed to this when placing your bid - no delivery charge refund will be issued

Please advise if you wish to return the item and I will issue a full refund on item return'.

If anyone tried to demand money back from me, I would on principle just tell them to send it back.

The effort people put into threads for this sort of pittance amazes me - it's barely worth anyone's time, for what £4? Some people are either desperate, or have no pride in themselves.

At which point if I were the buyer I would open a case with paypal, return the item and get the full amount back, including the £6 p&p charge. I'd be out the cost of second class recorded and you'd have a second hand item, low stars and a factual neg. I can see how you'd be the winner in the situation.

  • As I say, it's nowhere near so much the 'overcharge' (I don't much like that here as the total was fair), but rather the cheek of charging £5 over the stamp cost and not spending another 20p to go first class.

I haven't contacted or gone after the seller for a refund, as the price I paid was fair, but I do feel rather irritated at his attitude, hence why I'm trying to get this across in a neg; IMHO this is more likely to get the message across than taking what's effectively hush money- I hate to think what the hate crowd here would do if I took a refund and negged him

It is fee avoidance, simple as that and any seller who use this trick is asking for trouble.

The reason that ebay has such a bad rep is summed up by many of the posters above. If you list courier service and charge for it, then send second class. The buyer feels ripped off, and you could get into trouble.

There have been times when I have screwed up the postage costs and lost money. Charged for second class, but put 1st class in the listings. My mistake, so it is my problem, and the buyer gets the service they paid for.

Buyers can and often do pay more if their is 'free P&P'

Ironically a lot of dim buyers would be happy if an item was 7.50 with 'free p&p' but are unhappy if it was 2 + 5 P&P.

I went 'free postage' ages ago just to stop whining penny pinchers. Ironically I always used to charge actual Royal Mail postage cost only, and my stars were around 4.8.

But free postage (with delivery added into the price) is the way to go for sellers I think.

You raise the point that I often pick up on. I believe this is making a two tier system, so that buyers overcharging for postage will be hit more and more with low stars until they have all been removed from ebay.

As it is at the moment, most (not all) business sellers have gone Free post on all their suitable items, some savvy private sellers have followed them. So buyers are coming to expect that. So when asked to rate postage, even fair postage can look odd as buyers are used to not paying at all. So a buyer charging more than stamp cost is going to stick out like a sore thumb and I honestly believe they might as well wave goodbye to ebay sellig now.

I accept that many 'private' sellers want to use the 99p listings and need to load the postage- but realistically in the long run that is a costly choice. They might as well wait for one of the numerous free listing events and avoid the issue of low stars.

You can't dispute postage costs in Paypal - it's not a valid reason.

This site is called MoneySavingExpert - but in trying to get money back, it's actually going to cost you money to send back, and you'd have to open a Paypal claim for spurious reasons. Unless you planned to lie in the Paypal claim..

Go to the back of the class :D

I believe that the 10% FVF is now paid on postage costs as well as on the price of the item so there is no fee avoidance in increasing the P&P costs.

That's right - Ebay take 10% of the total amount, including P&P. And also around 4% from Paypal, so Ebay / Paypal are helping themselves to a chunk of the delivery charge.

The answer is rather than sell something at 6.50 + 3.00 p&p. is to charge 9.99 with 'free post' and that for some bizarre reason keeps buyers happy. It's insanity.

Whilst I don't want to make a sweeping genaralisation the ones I have seen all appear to be private sellers using 99p listings, so they are trying to avoid fees.

I just think that these sellers are shooting themselves in the foot and are trying to save a few pence at the long term cost of their selling account.

We don't get as many threads anymore about being suspended, but I do still get a few contact me privately- virtually all of them have lost their accounts due to the expanded seller dashboard lows- not the overall feedback. There are still sellers that think as long as they maintain 4.6 or more on the main dashboard they are absolutely fine and their buyers are happy, and really only noticing when it means they can't use the free listing events as they have fallen below standard.
