Ban the TV Licence

If you've never watched Catch-up services on a large screen TV, I think you'd be quite surprised with the quality.
Some content is available in 720p, which easily exceeds the picture quality of Freeview SD.0 -
The Tv licence is a tax. If the BBC is a national treasure` then it has nothing to fear from the open market.
Its not there isn't technology to block the BBC if people don't want to pay for it.
Imagine the Hoo-Ha if the was a Sky-Tax and people had to pay for it whether they wanted it or not. It's not the despair, Laura. I can take the despair. It's the hope I can't stand. ~ Brian Stimpson, Clockwise0 -
I wish they'd just encrypt the broadcasts so that those who watch it, can pay for it, and those that don't, are not subject to the harassment and intimidation from TV license salespeople.
They do make some good programmes but trying to force everyone to pay for it in this day and age is not the answer.
There should also be an independent investigation in to how Capita operate on their behalf.0 -
I am personally very glad we have the TV licence and the BBC.
If my recent visit to the USA and my experience of their television is anything to go by we definitely get the best programmes that they have to offer.
I would fear that without the license fee and the BBC that the quality of the programmes would descend to the same dire standard of those in the USA.0 -

if microsof started charging everyone for the use of recieving the internet, people would not stand for it.
It really is that absurd.
Why are you not campaigning to force Sky to offer a service that does not include content that requires a license?
No-one is forced to pay for a licence. Netflix or Lovefilm do not require a licence. Sky and Virgin make a commercial decision not to do so.
If you don't want the BBC do not watch or pay for it - absolutely no-one is forcing you.0 -

I think the Labour party should pay for their BBC.0

Its not just the US, everywhere has crap telly compared to us. The BBC is envied the world around and if you go abroad and watch their TV you understand why!0 -
I can see both sides really. TBH we only pay the licence fee because of the kids and most if not nearly all of the "live" tv they watch is never the beeb.
My teenage son NEVER watches live tv, he has a ps3 in his room and watches netflix via that. Our 10 year old watches more of netflix and online stuff rather than live tv and I suspect the younger ones will grow up the same way. All their friends are the same.
So the next generation look like they will be dropping out of the licence in droves so it may well disappear down the line anyway.
I do think there are a generation who rely on "auntie beeb", my parents watch more of BBC1 than anything. If I am honest I would say I watch virtually no BBC1 at all. But I do watch BBC2 and BBC3 probably once or twice a week. So for us its a heck of alot each month for a service we barely use and could happily live without.
BUT I can see for some the Beeb is well used. So I think there should be a middle ground. I think given the squeeze on peoples incomes that the fee should be cut and the BBC should have to become a leaner, meaner version of themselves. I think the fee should be cut by say 10% a year (to allow them to make cuts and sort themselves out) for 5 years. This brings the fee down to a reasonable level, particularly given that the people most relying on the "basic" channels are likely the ones on the lowest incomes-pensioners/on benefits/low paid.

To me its more of a fairness issue, i watch one bbc program a week (top gear) thats it, i do watch other tv but no more bbc at all, yet i have to pay for a licence, i would stream and cancel my tv licence but the broadband is poor round here its actually pointless to do that, so im left with no choice, however if the bbc was made pay per view i would have to decide to pay or not to pay for top gear and its cost. like i do now with sky.
surely those that reckon the bbc is a bargain would be prepared to pay more for such quality ?
i really dont understand the complaints of people saying it should be kept, why should i subsidise your tv ? i do not expect you to subsidise my fishing !
and one last thing please can someone how "miranda" is the envy of the world whilst keeping a straight face ?0
