The BBC make some amazing programmes and it's a training ground for producers, directors and writers who go on to do great things elsewhere.

They don't actually make that many top programs. Pretty much all of the top dramas will be made by firms like Kudos who then sell the rights to BBC and other broadcasters.
  • Actually it's ProgramMEs, not Programs!!!!

    Anyway,

Look at the alternative. Adverts every 5 minutes, cheap rubbish programmes, just a basic Sky-type offering of cheap imported stuff.

    No local radio!

Sorry, I know it's unpopular, but I am happy to pay about £12 a month for quality.

The cheapest Sky you can get is about £20 per month and the quality is non-existent compared with the BBC.

So I'm very happy to pay this small amount for so much top quality TV and radio.
  • For thoes who enjoy the BBC and do not mind paying it, let them carry on. Make the BBC a subscription channel just like others.

But why should a large portion of the population pay for something they do not want.
    Don't you get it??

So in your world, the BBC becomes a subscription only option.

The BBC income would drop like a stone because it would just become another low-quality subscription channel like sky.

Therefore, it would cease making programmes and simply buy in rubbish American shows like Sky does, then there would be no quality standard. The broadcasters would all be the same, peddling American dramas and comedies just like Sky!

That would be the end of a quality standard, and we'd all get our TV based on the American model which is cheap, tacky poor quality shows. Nothing else, just boxsets basically!

To me its more of a fairness issue, i watch one bbc program a week (top gear) thats it, i do watch other tv but no more bbc at all, yet i have to pay for a licence, i would stream and cancel my tv licence but the broadband is poor round here its actually pointless to do that, so im left with no choice, however if the bbc was made pay per view i would have to decide to pay or not to pay for top gear and its cost. like i do now with sky.

surely those that reckon the bbc is a bargain would be prepared to pay more for such quality ?
i really dont understand the complaints of people saying it should be kept, why should i subsidise your tv ? i do not expect you to subsidise my fishing !

and one last thing please can someone how "miranda" is the envy of the world whilst keeping a straight face ?

    Agree.

It really is about fairness, I can't blame some people on here for being passionate about their BBC, but not everyone agrees with them.

Some of the comments asking on the lines of "none forces you to pay".

I would like to watch other channels as they are being broadcasted, in order to watch other channels, I am forced to pay. This is the unfairness, thus I am forced in a position to watch non broadcasted video.

    With regards to the BBC content being damaged if the licence fee was gone;

This is really personal preference, other channels seem to manage. I consider Channel 4 content to be far superior.

Channels such as Sky Atlantic, CBS, Discovery and even channel 5 now is more entertaining than the BBC.

With regards to the Poll. The Poll was to answer the simple question, "Should people have to pay to watch broadcasted TV" which is the fact of the matter.

I am surprised the amount of support for the BBC and its forced fee.

As I have already said (even though some may think I do not care for their opinion) I respect peoples views and opinions.

However, there are many who disagree with a company who threaten and force society to pay for their "service".

There are many videos on YouTube of people who are against the BBC.

The law is featured on "Dumb Laws.com".

Even Noel Edmonds has said he will not pay for the licence.

At the end of the day, watching TV should not have a "licence" and Freeview should be what the name says "FREE view".

People can watch and support whichever channel, programme and service they want, I just think without prejudice and being taxed.

I cancelled my licence at the end of 2010, and now only watch DVDs (mostly bought second hand) or via a streaming service (which costs me under £3 a month) - all of which is funded by the money I save by not paying for a licence.

In the last 3 or 4 years of having a licence I can probably count the number of times I turned on a BBC channel on the fingers of one hand. They USED to do some brilliant shows (several of which I now own as boxed sets of DVDs), but it went downhill very rapidly in the late 80's/early 90's.

And I never listen to any of their radio channels either, much preferring the music selection on a local commercial channel - I've got really good at tuning out the adverts.

As far as I'm concerned they do need funding, but I'd much rather it were through advertising like all the other channels. That way they'd have to sell the adverts, which means proving to companies it pays to advertise on their channels. In order to do that they'd have to be able to prove good viewing figures, and the only way they'll get those is by producing good programmes and stopping the endless repeats I was seeing.

The licence fee is very cheap because everyone pays it

    No they don't.

    I don't, for a start.

It's an optional tax. Just dump your TV.

You don't need to dump your TV.

Just use it for non-live broadcast purposes.

Why don't bbc employees deserve a pension, in your opinion?

Why should the public pay for their pensions?

I have to pay for my own.

Why shouldn't BBC employees do the same?
  • how can they prove you don't watch your tv?

    Do you mean:-

"how can they prove you do watch your tv"?
  • I think the conclusion is if you don't watch live TV, then dump the licence as I did a few months back after my TV blew.

Decided not to have it repaired or renew the licence as I was only turning it on once a month or so, and I find 90% of their programmes boring. I prefer selective downloading of rare quality stuff.

Not had Capita's septic knuckled crooks knocking yet, and if I do, I will complain to TVL and my MP.
