  • penguingirl, how many weeks are you now and when did you start being told the baby's percentile? I've had the bump measurement twice now; at 23 and 27 weeks but it was done so quickly and all she said was "absolutely fine". No details. I'm seeing her again Wednesday morning.

I think I need to dig out the lists when I get onto a computer later and repost them as we've moved on several pages and haven't had any new joiners lately (unless I missed them!)

Apparently they don't plot before 26 weeks- nothing was plotted from my first growth scan at 25 weeks although that does show centiles but my bump was measured last week at 27 and plotted.

Will see what they do with the growth scan data this week. Fingers crossed bean is still growing nicely- head and tummy were both up near 90th last time. And i'm intrigued to see which way up/ round he/ she is as midwife thought head was over to the side last week.

Feeling quite waddly now and definitely feeling the need to get more sorted on the 'to buy' list. Bought a nightie for hospital bag today- I don't wear them but can see why they're going to be easier for labour

I'm 34+2. In my area they plot them on a graph in your notes that they generated at the 20 week scan, it shows the 10, 50 and 90 centile lines on and maps bump size to predicted baby size- they started doing it at about 26 weeks. The midwives have said they ignore the actual sizes as they are nowhere near as accurate as scans, but do use the overall pattern of growth to check it's on track and send you for a scan if needed.

We've just been for some shopping and got last bits for hospital bag, so going to pack it at the weekend.

Edit: only thing we need now is baby monitor- anyone decided on one yet? We're thinking of bake just getting an audio one, not sure video is really needed and some have said it made them more anxious

I've just had a bit of an online mothercare spree since they've got easter deals- a pump/ bottle/ steriliser set for half price etc.

I think SIL said we could have their old audio only monitor- they now have a two channel video fancypants one since they have two kids now. Need to arrange to catch up with them really, see what else they're ready to hand on. Think nephew two had virtually outgrown the moses basket the other week already (he's 9 weeks today!)
  • Baby monitor is pretty much the only thing we haven't got yet as well. But I imagine we won't need it very early on as will be with baby all the time so might wait until after. OH anxious about premature arrival and wants hospital bag packed by 34 weeks... think the only things left are maternity pads, breast pads (are these needed for hospital bag?), and wipes. And the actual act of putting it all in bags of course.

What kind of births is everything thinking about? We've only had the one antenatal class so far but I'm thinking of a water birth. I find hot water has an immense pain relieving effect on me so hoping a water birth will be good natural pain relief. Going to dig out the list now and repost

Eeeek I'm still last on the list!

My hospital bag etc will be packed for around 34 weeks as we're away at weddings at 34ish and 35ish weeks and far enough away from home that I'd like car seat etc in the car just in case. I think breast pads will probably pop in too. After all, a few won't take up much space?

Have talked a bit about birth with Oh but we haven't had our (one day of) classes yet. Despite being fairly happy to take medication most of the time, pethidine and epidurals both sound like they have as many downsides as upsides to me. And I'd tried a friends TENS for bad back, she swore by it but I really didn't like it so probably go for the pool, and the hypnobirthing track as far as possible, try gas and air and see how that goes etc.

Same for us - it's quite nice to know.

We're not getting a baby monitor - I think they make you worry more rather than reducing our worry. And in any case, our house isn't that big, so we'll be able to hear from anywhere anyway!

One lady from our hypnobirthing class gave birth at the weekend - 50 minute labour! (second child), but she was raving about the hypnobirthing stuff afterwards, and said it worked a treat. So that has inspired me to get a bit more practise in!

I have been advised against pethidine and an epidural by the anaesthetist, so it's relaxation, hypnosis and gas and air for me, unless it all goes horribly wrong

Ah so much to catch up on, before I forget why I came on to post I'll get that out of the way first.

Came across a post this morning on facebook and someone was asking about cord tying instead of cord clamping. It is not something I've ever heard of before, have any of you ladies heard of it or used it yourself?

Clara it can't be easy with everyone eager to know whether you have gone or not yet. My fingers are still crossed you go before your appt on Wed but you can refuse to be induced.

Glad you had a nice birthday Penguin.

We found out in our NCT classes that partners get kicked out at 9 if you are in one of the wards. Doesn't matter if you have already given birth or have had the pessary, which hasn't taken effect yet. Personally not keen on that but we were told that there is nothing stopping us from leaving also. They can advise against it, but it is really up to the individual. The lady who ran it was also keen on us all trying to get an individual care plan instead of the standard plan which I think is something we will look at. She did say there is nothing stopping you from trying to bargain with the midwifes especially when it comes to the individual being induced but being quite early on in the labour process. Definitely a lot to take in and process.

For those asking about bump measurements, my first one was done at 28 weeks, then again at 31 weeks and again it is a rough estimation. Bump measured small for us, which meant getting a growth scan and a lot of worry etc. Got our scan and yeah bump was small but not as small as the chart made out. So my advice is definitely take it with a pinch of salt.

As for baby monitors, we just want a basic one and I think the OH has decided on one of the BT ones, maybe the 350/400. Not 100% sure but I know its just the audio monitor with the 2 way talk thing.

Arbrighton I was very surprised with the Tens machine, again not something I'd even considered beforehand but definitely looking at hiring one, will need to weigh up the costs. Only downside is they can't be used for a water birth, which there is no guarantee of even getting.

Hopefully I haven't missed anything out, and will try to keep a bit more uptodate.

Ha - we've had loads of pregnancies at work recently, and I was last on the list for ages, but now someone else has come along to make me feel better. Sure the same will happen here :)

Oh, and edited to add - all that information about induction and early labour is really useful - you're giving me more questions to ask at our own course, as early labour I think is a time when it will be really useful to have OH there, and I'd really rather be doing that bit at home...tempted to get some of that clary sage oil just in case!
