I had lower back pain at the beginning of the second trimester and was actually referred to physio but it eased off and I never ended up going. This doesn't feel like it's my back, it's actually within my ribs. I'm wondering if I've some how damaged something inside or have some sort of infection. I'm at hospital tonight for babies heart monitoring and have got a midwife appt on Thursday so will mention it. I just think they're going to laugh at me and say "What, you can't handle a bit of rib pain?! How the hell are you going to cope with labour??". Stupid, I know!0

No personal experience MancMama, but a friend who gave birth a couple of months ago had GD picked up at 26 weeks and was able to control it with her diet. I've got my GTT at the end of the month, and you'll probably be an expert by then!
I had terrible rib pain in the third trimester in my previous pregnancy Tinks. I actually thought I'd broken a rib (felt something pop when I sneezed during a bad cold) and mentioned it to my consultant at an appointment, but she shrugged it off saying "even if it is broken, we can't do anything about it". My GP was a bit more sympathetic and prescribed me some pain killers (codeine I think). Hope you get some kind of relief from it anyway.
I had my 24 week midwife appt today (24+5), so I guess it's time for me to join in over here. Baby boy #2 due in February.0 -
Psycho huge congrats on your new arrival, beautiful name and sounds like you did absolutely brilliantly! Xx
Had my GTT this week and infortunately I've been diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes... I am so upset about itI have been so good with diet and taking care of myself and thought I had avoided it (my Dad is type 2 and I'm overweight so at higher risk). I am seriously beating myself up about the risks involved... does anyone have any experience in this that could give me some thoughts?
I'm going under the diabetic clinic now until the end of the preganancy and will be testing my blood sugar 5-7 times a day with a machine (got an appointment to pick it up and go through things on Thursday). I will then need fortnightly checks and growth scans (had one today and was measuring at 49th percentile at 3lb 6oz at 30+4) so baby size is fine... but what had me in tears was the consultant said they don't like to let you go past 38 weeks with GD as there is a risk of the placenta failing etc... (she didn't say stillbirth but I have heard it mentioned as a possible higher risk).
If anyone can shed some light on what I can expect that would be great... after being so well so far I am just so disappointed that the last 7 weeks (!! - if I go early) are going to be filled with anxiety and worry X
My wife had gestational diabetes and we were told it may have caused our son to be born with a low birth weight (they estimated 6.5 lbs but he was actually 4.5 lbs). He was perfectly healthy (he went full term and was delivered at 38 + 5) but just needed extra formula feeds to bulk him up. Apparently it can cause the baby to be low birth weight or more chubby so they need to keep an eye on it but other than that we were told it as long as they keep it under control it will be fine and has been...try not to worry.0 -
First NCT class last night and found it really good! It seems like it's going to be *much* more in depth than the Daisy Birthing classes I did a couple of months ago although they were really enjoyable for the yoga and breathing aspects. It was nice to be in a small group with people who are at the same pregnancy stage as me so we were all going through pretty much the same things and OH enjoyed having the other guys there to chat to so I'm glad we signed up. Whether it's worth the expense remains to be seen!
So I've well and truly given up on sleep now. When I get up for my 5am pee I am just not getting back to sleep so I've decided to just start getting up and making myself useful. I think I feel better for it as the tossing and turning was stressing me out. Guess this is getting me ready for things to come...!0 -
Glad to hear you enjoyed your NCT class Pink! I've heard excellent things about them.
I've given up on sleep too. 6 times I got up for a pee last night! Think I might aswell just move my bed into the bathroom.
We went for the weekly heart monitoring last night and found that babies heart seems to have righted itself and there's no ectopic beat present meaning we don't have to go for anymore regular monitoring which is great.
32 week midwife appointment tomorrow. It's scary that I might only have a couple more appointments left now. I've just been looking at my notes and saw that there's a health visitor home visit in the next few weeks. Just wondering if anyone has had this yet? We really could do without it - we're in the middle of getting the kitchen done, the house is upside down and there's constantly workmen here. Don't fancy discussing childbirth with a builder stood behind me!0 -
I had a midwife appointment this morning (I'm 37+4 today
) All ticking along nicely and so happy to be on maternity leave at last!!
I got a phonecall from my health visitor on Monday wanting to arrange to come on the 16th (I'm due on the 19th and would rather not still be pregnant by then to be honest but she's due to come then! :P)
Anyway it's totally optional if you have them to come for an antenatal visit - I might miss mine as I'm due another midwife appointment on the same day so if I don't get home quick she might have gone!0 -
Thanks for the input zarf, I have my first appointment at the diabetic clinic today so will see what they say and then start testing! I'm feeling kind of ok now the shock has worn off, I just need to do whatever I can the next 9 weeks to get my boy here safe and sound - if that means cutting out all junk I will do it!
PP I am in the "get up at 5am after a pee" gang too! Oh well, at this rate lack of sleep won't bother us too much in future... Our NCT classes aren't for another month but really looking forward to them now.
Hope everyone is feeling good, who's due next?! XMancMama4 (35) TTC since Apr 15, MMC Dec 15, Our Rainbow Baby Charlie arrived Dec 16 :heart2:0 -
hi all!
sorry its been a while since I last posted - I too dont know where the weeks are going!
was 31 weeks monday just gone and got my 31 week midwife appointment today with the witch! we really dont like her but dont want to cause a fuss and ask for a new one.
she makes us feel like we have been naughty children and everything we say or do isnt good enough and that its just a job to her and we are just another couple expecting a baby (which yes, we are, but its all new to us!)
thankfully we have google and you lovely lot on here so I know about not sleeping on my back etc as she has told us nothing of the sort.
speaking of which - I found a relief for my sore/achy hips when sleeping! I use a little flat V-shaped pillow and lie on top of it so my hip is supported both sides of the V. its made sleeping so much easier and not painful!
I'll catch up on posts I've missed over the weeks as soon as I get a sec!0 -
Good luck with the diabetic clinic appointment Manc, let us know how you get on!
All was well at my midwife appointment this morning. Baby is measuring one week ahead and is head down. Nothing that can be done for my rib pain, she said they're likely just inflamed and will be for the rest of the pregnancy which is lovely to hear. Next appointment is with my GP in two weeks time. Already know that one will be a waste of time!0 -
think I've caught up on posts now lol!
psycho - that's a beautiful name!
Freddie - that's great news that little man is latching on properly now - hopefully it will give your OH a chance to catch up on sleep!
manc - sorry to hear about the diabetes, fingers crossed that the clinic gets it under control for you. a girl at works sister had the same and said that there's some amazing cook books now that have lovely recipes.
as for me, we went to see the midwife earlier and think she's had a personality transplant! she was nice, laughing and joking, said baby is growing nicely and that she has moved to the correct position0
