  • If you really want to breastfeed getting a pump/steriliser will do no harm. With my first my boy didn't latch till day 5 and that was with the help of a nipple sheild he then came off the nipple shield at 8 weeks and we had supply issues so i needed to pump to up my supply.

Obviously if baby latches fine trying a bottle is best left to about 6 weeks so there is no nipple confusion.

I brought myself a medela swing pump on leaving hospital and used it loads. So I could spend time away from baby and esp when I went back to work as baby was 11 months and I pumped at work twice a day to maintain supply for him etc.

I need to buy a steriliser as mine was recalled for a fault, so I need a new one but with breastfeeding you only need to sterilise up to 6 months, I think it's a year or longer with formula.

Ok sorry about going on but I am very passionate about breastfeeding.

Am now 24 weeks so moving to this thread,

I got loads of comments last week about how big I am looking haha rather annoying but I don't take it personally.

  • Thanks for that Jedi, I'll def get one in as you just never know. Surely even nipple shields need to be sterilised too? All these simple things are so easy to not think about!
  • Nicky - We cross-posted earlier so apologies for missing you! Hooray for finishing work, I hope you manage to get some well deserved rest in your remaining baby-free weeks :) And I hope you have fun on the hen-do, you're very brave going away on your own so close to DD! Will you be travelling home the same day?

Princess - yes my midwife has checked position each time, although I still don't know how she does it, I've tried! The first time baby was lying across transverse, but then on Weds it was head down. Today at my scan baby was lying transverse again with its head at my right. I had been feeling movements which I assumed were kicks in my right side just moments before going in, so I was rather surprised to find that the 'kicks' were most probably punches (unless it turned itself around very quickly!) so it may be punches that you are feeling too. I always thought punches would be softer but I can't seem to tell the difference :p

sulphate - exciting that everything seems to be coming together now! I can't wait to start washing the baby clothes, but I feel that if I did it now I would want to do them again nearer the time as they may have gathered dust :p Not that my house is particularly dusty of course :o Thanks for the info about the HV - I'm guessing that because they asked about domestic violence your OH wasn't there? It's good that they do that though.

Welcome to jedi, good to see you over here!:hello:

RE: sterilisers and bottles. I bought a Tommee Tippee microwave steriliser and set of 6 bottles from Aldi in their latest baby event as they were a great price and would do for either ff or ebm depending on what happens. My intention is to bf but if I'm finding it difficult or perhaps it causes me pain then I think I will go to ff as I really don't want to force something that isn't working, especially if it makes me - and/or baby! - stressed and miserable. Of course that is just my opinion now, it may well change! I'm also really against the idea of expressing at present, it really doesn't appeal to me; I hate the thought of being plumbed in and milked like a cow :o:o:o so I'm not going to buy a pump until baby is actually here and I'll see what sort of mindset I'll be in at the time, which again of course could change!

Just to update you all, my 4d scan was AMAZING!!!! I feel silly for ever feeling nervous about seeing baby, I actually got really emotional seeing its face for the first time :)

Because we were wanting to stay team yellow the scan focused on the face, although we did get a little glimpse of a foot, and had the normal measurements and heartbeat taken from the 2d scan. Despite telling the sonographer we didn't want to find out the gender, she referred to baby as 'her' / 'she' twice! The first time we just let it go, but the second time we asked if it is a girl and she fobbed us off and laughed saying 'Or he!' and that its just habit for her. After seeing baby I'm still thinking boy as is my Mum, although DH has now changed to thinking girl. Either way, we're still not sure for definite so still team yellow :) It had a little grumpy face at certain points which was very amusing, but then towards the end we got what looked like a smile. We're both very happy parents to be at the moment and now want the rest of this pregnancy to hurry up as we are now even more impatient to meet baby than we were before!

Edited to add... baby has a big head!!! and even though I'm 28+5 most of the measurements were coming up as around 30 weeks! Current weight is estimated as 3lb4oz, I'm slightly over the 50th centile line, and the sonographer reckons that if weight gain continues to be steady then I can expect baby to be between 8-9 lbs  It's really hard making out what all the abbreviations means on the data sheet though, but she didn't see any problems :)
  • Amazing to have so much detail missy! 9lb tho, ouch! Were you or OH big babies?

Just a reminder, Asda's baby event starts instore tomorrow and I've heard Aldi are having another soon too. I *think* I'm pretty ok for most things now but I'm sure I'll find something I just HAVE to have!
  • I know Princess, I wince everytime I think about it :o Hmmm, yes unfortunately both me and OH were chunks... I was 9lbs6oz and OH just tipped over 10lb!! Do I opt for caesarean now?! :p

Thanks for the reminder about the Asda and Aldi events. Just checked the Aldi website and it doesn't give a date yet, although as of Thurs 15th they've had cleaning products in - perhaps ideal for anyone nesting!

    Hi Everyone!

I've just been reading the last few pages to catch up with some familiar names! It's sounds like you're all doing really well (apart from wallpaper issues and dosy MWs ;) )

Our little bump (not so little now actually!) is now 25 weeks so I'd like to transfer over here to the big girl's thread please if you'll have me!? :D

Quick catch-up for those who don't know me...

It's not actually me that's pregnant, it's 'the wife' (civil partner, so I'm not some random bloke trying to muscle in on girly things! lol)

All is going pretty well. Bump is now wriggling loads which is great for me as I can 'feel' a more tangible link to my forthcoming child. It properly booted me the other day which was pretty cool... for me at least :D

We have been busy collecting every possible thing a parent-to-be could possibly need/never need... the phrase my friend's hilarious Irish mother used to use springs to mind "it'll come in handy; even if you never use it!" :rotfl:

With a little luck DW should finally book us onto the NCT course this week - I did organise this weeks ago but she never got around to it as the MW said people don't book them til later on... and then the one we wanted wasn't available... fingers crossed we'll get on this one, although it is quite late in the day as DW will be about 37 weeks by the last session! I have real fears of her going into labour early... I'm running a marathon at week 37 too so have it in my mind that I'll get flagged down part way through to tell me to divert to the hospital! :o

Morning all. I'm at the hospital for my diabetes test. I've never seen the antenatal clinic so quiet. It's just me in the waiting room. So I gave to sit still now for two hours after drinking a bottle of lucazade. Can't leave, eat or drink anything. I've got my iPad and a movie!

Thank you princess kate for info on baby events. A huge asda is by the hospital, which I'm never usually near, so I will pop on on my way home.
  • The hen weekend is actually worrying me a little bit but I know everything will be fine even if I do go into labour or need to go to hospital for any reason as luckily the do is in the city where me and the hen are both from so I'm sleeping at my mums on the Friday and Saturday night - just got to manage the long day out on the Sat! Hubby is also only 40 miles away if I need him. I'm hoping I'll feel well by Friday and can really enjoy it or at least put a brave face on for the hen. I just feel sick or achy or tired or in pain most of the time now but hopefully a few days of resting this week will help (and that I don't have baby in the next week! Lol). It will certainly be my last day out without baby for a couple of months so want to enjoy! Luckily baby is invited to the wedding of the hen which is in April so will be hard work (it's a whole weekend away) but hubby will be there and I get to dress baby up in something cute! It's my 30th birthday in April so hoping to feel able to leave baby for at least a couple of hours or plan a baby-friendly celebration! Then we have another wedding in May but baby is not invited so hoping to feel OK about leaving him/her by then. Which also leads me on to steriliser/pump conversation - I've bought a manual pump and a mini steriliser that just microwaves one bottle as I'm intending to BF but may need to express in some of the situations mentioned above! Either that or might do the odd formula feed if I'm struggling but not bought any formula yet - I'm hoping to exclusively BF for the first few weeks at least and will buy formula if/when I need it. My SIL did recommend nipple shields - I hadn't even thought about sterilising them! Might have to look into that as my steriliser just fits a bottle I think.

Glad your scan was so good Missy - I bet you are now so excited to meet your little one! My baby is measuring above average weight too, I reckon I'm growing a right chubster but just hoping my body will know what to do!

Good luck with your last days at work sulphate - you must be feeling well to be going to 38 weeks! I was so ready to finish last week!

I also need to get measured for some nursing bras - all the bras I've bought so far are too small now round my back even with an extender! I reckon I've only gone up one cup size but my back has gone from a 34 to about a 40! Planning to go this week, I'm just really reluctant to spend a lot on bras that might not fit for long but I guess it is important.

Hi downhill - lovely to hear from the perspective of a partner. My OH loves it when he feels the baby move which is quite a lot now!

Well it's my first official day of mat leave today so after breakfast I'm off to wash some baby clothes!
