;discussion/4892747]Never ceases to amaze me how useless the NHS is in this country. Constantly astounded by the amount of incompetence and laziness displayed by staff.

Have had a multitude of problems with GP over the years. Latest is wife has been waiting months to see a consultant - eventually she phoned and spoke to consultant secretary. No referral from GP. So shes been waiting months, in pain, for nothing.
Turns out someone at GP practice 'forgot' to send it. Not the first time this has happened. In the past, consultant has sent a fax marked URGENT back to GP whos staff managed to put it in a pile for two weeks.

Someone seriously needs to lose their jobs for this sort of behaviour....
My husband, who should have had a chance to live, died because a GP who thought he may have had a stroke still made him make an appointment for 5 weeks later. A week later we took him to A&E where he was given a scan and found to have had multible strokes. He died a couple of weeks later despite the excellent care of the hospital nurses and doctors. He mat well have died anyway but he wasn't given a chance.
The incompetance of some GPS today astound me.
No faith in the doctors today but the practice nurses in my surgery are excellent. After going for 6 years to my GP with chest pains, palpertations etc it was a nurse who spotted that i had a heart problem.

Two examples quoted and on both occasions it appears that it wasn't the GP's fault but admin staff.
It's someone else's fault.
• Yes I know that the NHS isn't perfect but if you'd rather have a system like the US where they want to know your insurance details first before even a porter lifts a finger to help you well you know what you can do.

I've got some low cost private health care and if I felt the NHS wait was too long then I'd be calling on that .

Mind you you have to wonder why your wife waited months before ringing - surely it would have wiser to have wait a month (max) and then ring?

btw my local hospital is fab (well all bar the insufficient parking facilities!)

Might be a good organisation to talk to. They seem good!
;64663517]Fine by me. Probably agree about the IT. Like I said, I'm not NHS staff but outside contractor.

Will agree that maybe my experience is limited to my local area but other areas (such as Staffs) seem to have it even worse.

Why should I go elsewhere or pay privately if I pay my taxes? Thats the problem - the NHS is held up like this sort of GOD like institution that is so wonderful and is untouchable.

Reality is its not working and needs a massive overhaul including the staff.
You are so right. Medical profession is no different from veterinary profession. When you make a complaint is like hittining your head against brick wall.

From experience I've learned to be persistent with GPs, hospital staff and any other NHS area I speak to and to be pro-active about following up on appointments, test results etc just in case there's been an admin error.

In the OP's case it could be just one person at the GP's surgery who is rubbish at their job, not had training etc. The Practice Manager needs to be made aware of the issues in a calm and factual manner and required to give a full explanation. Refer the matter further if this is not forthcoming.

You need to know how to play the medical game, the tricks I have picked up working in the medical sector means I can always get an appointment when I want and can meet a consultant within a week occasionally more depending on the consultant.

US system would be better. All well and good having a free health service in the UK but, to be honest, its not up to scratch any more.

EXACTLY. Amazing how many people think its wrong to complain about the good old nhs. Thats the problem we think its free so we can;t complain. Its not we pay tax for this.
