Completely useless GP

Options
Never ceases to amaze me how useless the NHS is in this country. Constantly astounded by the amount of incompetence and laziness displayed by staff.

Have had a multitude of problems with GP over the years. Latest is wife has been waiting months to see a consultant - eventually she phoned and spoke to consultant secretary. No referral from GP. So shes been waiting months, in pain, for nothing.

Turns out someone at GP practice 'forgot' to send it. Not the first time this has happened. In the past, consultant has sent a fax marked URGENT back to GP whos staff managed to put it in a pile for two weeks.

Someone seriously needs to lose their jobs for this sort of behaviour....

  • Have you considered changing your GP? I know people who have had problems with similar things who have voted with their feet and gone elsewhere.

    Its an option of course.

I just dont understand it how a professional person can be allowed to get away with it though. Some of mistakes made - if I did similar in my job I wouldnt last a week (I work in IT for the NHS at the moment)

    It's an option ? You "suppose" !!!!

Sorry but I find your attitude towards your wife's health very odd. If I felt any of my loved ones weren't getting the care they should from our GP I wouldn't be so casual but would actively be looking at alternatives. I have to wonder why you aren't doing the same.

If despite your feelings your wife doesn't want to change but is unhappy with the fax incident she (as the patient) should be complaining in writing to the surgery's practice manager in the first instance. It's no good complaining on a forum - that won't change anything-a formal complaint may.

(As you currently work for the NHS I hope you're posting on your teabreak ;) )

Local hospital is the same unfortunately. Pletora of complaints to both GP and local hospital.

Difficult to change GP - there is no other in the area close enough.

Complaining about the NHS, as I've found is a complete waste of time. The response you get back follows the same old formula as below.

Can we deny it or is it difficult to prove? If so, deny it.
If we can't deny it, is there any way we can blame someone else? If so, do that.
If we still can't, can we roll out that old chestnut about government cuts/funding etc? If so, do that.
Finally, if all else fails say, yes, we agree with you, sorry about that. No further action, nothing gets done.

    Like I said, completely pointless.

Local hospital, of course, we cant' change. Over the last few years spend £1000s on private treatment when we've been let down by the local hospital.

To be fair, wouldnt let the local hospital look after my hamster....

(BTW - I work for nhs out of the area although not in work today!)

Is this the same hospital that the consultant she's waiting to see works at?

TBH - and I do appreciate that this is a vent on the 'Praise, Vent & Warning' board - I find people who gripe about something but won't do anything about it 'because there's no point' very irritating.

Unfortunately! See my post about how my complaints have been dealt with so far.
  • I do see your complaint, but what exactly do you want to happen?, your GP would have made the referral and it would have been passed to a medical secretary of the practice, or similar, to send the referral, do you want someone to be sacked because of this error?

At the end of the day, any service that involves humans has the potential for mistakes to happen, errors to be made and omissions, no one is infallible, it just totally grates more when you are human, on the receiving end and in pain as your wife is.

But I'm not sure what you are wanting to happen, a cast iron guarantee that it won't happen again? Someone to be sacked?

One thing that does anger me is this attitude that 'everyone in the nhs is lazy and couldn't give a damn' especially hen I have just got up from a night shift in a very busy cardiac unit, during an extremely busy night where we were 2 staff down and doing our damnedest to keep our patients safe, please don't tar everyone in the nhs with the same brush just because of your experience.

You seem to have a very defeatist attitude here. You can't change GPs and you don't even think it's worth complaining to the GP's practice.

Have you actually complained to that GP's practice before? If not, then put in a written complaint. Make it strictly factual, not a moan or a rant, or a claim for compensation. See what response you get.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

You clearly don't have a behind the scenes understanding of the NHS.
